The year is young and already sees one of its highlights, the 25th annual Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, the most important and prestigious Ferrari Meeting in the US and most likely in the world. Over two decades ago the American Ferrari Magazine Cavallino started with a Ferrari Concours in the glamorous Breakers Hotel in the billionaire’s winter retreat.

After a sunny Thursday at the former Moroso Race Track the second day of the annual Cavallino Classic was more some sort of water games than proper racing. After a horrible weather forecast the timetable was rescheduled to get the races done before the lunch break.

Cavallino Classic 25 – Wet Track Day

After the two track days at the nearby Palm Beach International Raceway finally the engine quiet down for the cars to be shown on the lawn of the famous Breakers Hotel. For the 25th time the cars were lined up on the three lawns in front of the picturesque building sorted by age with the most popular vintage section on the upper lawn and the post-Enzo cars on the lower.

Today the 25th Cavallino Classic came to an end with the multi-marque concours at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. A memorable jubilee edition of the leading Ferrari Concours event saw another day full of highlights at the Classic Sports Sunday in a year of very changeable weather conditions. After heavy rain on Friday on the race track, heavy wind of the storm through at the Breakers on Saturday this morning saw some freezing temperatures very unusual for Florida.

A highlight of the world-famous Rétromobile week, the auction achieved €19,035,550* ($20,843,927 US) before a standing-room-only crowd. With active bidding from global collectors representing 24 countries, the result was a successful sell-through of 79 percent. Highlighting the evening sale was the 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, which realized a strong €2.744.000 to lead a group of seven automobiles that achieved individual million-euro-plus results.

The annual Le Mans test day was held on Sunday 05 June as a prelude to the main event over the weekend of 18-19 June, with all the accepted entrants taking part in the two four hour sessions. World Record Achieved as Porsche 550 Sells for £4.6 Million at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Auction

An exceptionally original, never restored yet beautifully preserved 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder was a runaway success at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale (10 September), selling for £4,593,500, creating a world record for a Porsche 550 model. James Knight, Bonhams International Group Motoring Director and auctioneer on the day, said: "We've had an excellent Goodwood Revival sale, totaling £14.5 million. The saleroom was packed full of enthusiastic bidders, with clients phoning in from all around the globe, leading us to sell more than 70% of lots, and creating a world record price for a Porsche 550 Spyder.

A magical step back in time! This was always the slogan of the Goodwood Revival Meeting in September recreating an atmosphere of the past both on and off the track, but never was the time as precise as this year: 1966.
Half a century ago the final curtain fell on the high speed circuit near Chichester that showcased many international races over two decades linked with all the great names of this era like Sir Stirling Moss who won the very first race in 1948 and ended his career after a horrible crash in 1962.

Mark Osborne, Vice President Motor Cars USA, said, ”The 1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder offered is so original, that you could travel back in time 60 years and find it in much the same condition. It’s exactly how a 550 would have looked, smelt and felt like when James Dean famously purchased his example back in 1955.” Dean’s was perhaps the most famous of the 550s; he called his example the ‘Little Bastard’.
