Sebring International Raceway will host the first act of the FIA World Endurance Championship season, with the Ferraris lining up to defend their drivers’ and constructors’ titles in the LMGTE Pro class and the drivers’ and teams’ ones (with AF Corse) in the LMGTE Am. The first of the six legs on the World Championship calendar is steeped in history. The unevenness of the asphalt on the Florida track, the site of a training airfield during the Second World War, also makes it difficult to set up the cars.

A new era for Formula 1 gets underway in Bahrain. Less than a week ago, pre-season testing came to an end at the same Sakhir track, just six days for the teams to get to grips with this year’s new generation of cars. Among the many changes to the regulations, a return to ground effect, Pirelli’s larger 18 inch tyres, the use of E10 eco-fuel and an increase in the car’s minimum weight. Scuderia Ferrari completed almost 4000 kilometres of testing with the F1-75, more than any other team and Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were favourably impressed.

The two letters SL are the world-famous hallmark and distinction of a unique Mercedes-Benz sports car tradition: for 70 years, the abbreviation has stood for “super-light” and thus for sporty motoring – from the 300 SL racing sports car (W 194) from 1952 to the latest SL in the 232 model series from the sports car and performance brand Mercedes-AMG. The forefather W 194 remains reserved for motorsport, but in doing so it conveys an important Mercedes-Benz brand value: as the oldest luxury car manufacturer in the world, the brand has been involved in motorsport for many eras – and has been highly successful.

When the motorcar was invented more than 125 years ago soon people found a way to compete with each other. In the beginning the cars were tested on long distance drives on the reliability in the new technology but sooner or later it became the question who is simply the fastest on a given distance. In the beginning those races were held on public roads until purpose-built race tracks or hill climbs took over. Until the late 1950s some of the most exciting races held on the public road until crashes like the 1957 Mille Miglia fatality took this era to an end.

“The right crowd but not crowded”, this might be the one expression that fits the Goodwood Members Meeting. The Goodwood Road Racing Club has three major events during the year and each of them is unique in its own right. The oldest of them is the Festival of Speed going up the hill at Goodwood house, this is together with the British F1 GP the largest motor sport event in the UK. It is dedicated to everything fast and loud on two and four wheels and also includes a replacement for the British Motor show as it features all the manufacturers on display in the large infield.

The Goodwood Members’ Meeting returned to its regular April date after last year’s postponement to October due to the pandemic situation. The whole weekend was bathed in virtually constant spring sunshine, although a breeze kept overall ambient temperatures down, but it was still pleasantly warm. The spring-like atmosphere was enhanced by “A host, of golden daffodils; … fluttering and dancing in the breeze” (to plagiarise part of the poem by William Wordsworth), which lined various parts of the track, and were also predominant as part of the hospitality areas decor.

Salon Privé’s inaugural “Concours de Vente” took place in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea between the 21-23 April 2022, offering a new take on the concours theme, in that all the cars on display were from dealers and available to purchase at or after the event. The Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded in 1692, “hospital” being the old term for almshouses, as a retirement home for those that had served in the British Army, and is famous for its Chelsea Pensioners in their red tunics, and also for being the venue for the annual Chelsea flower Show.

Finally, we are back in Paris in April for this year’s Tour Auto. After the last summer edition, the tour through the French countryside went back to its usual date in April when Paris is surrounded by the yellow rape fields that should become our background for the next days.  231 cars were entered at this year’s edition and as the Grand Palais is still not finished after its renovation the cars were lined up in the parc d´exposition that hosted the Retromobile earlier in March.

C´est parti! The 2022 edition of the Tour Auto is on its way from Paris to Andorra. At 6 am the first cars left Paris from the Parc d´Exposition to Rambouillet where the official start of the TA is this year. Due to the unforeseeable traffic in the capitol the start of the time keeping is never in Paris itself but in one of the chateaux in the outskirts of the métropole. But as there is still a long day ahead the first cars always have to leave very early and they see the sunset usually on their way.

Tour Auto 2022 Day 1 ... Paris to La Baule

After the Tour Auto took off yesterday the French classic now is in full swing as the cars and the drivers are settling in and become more and more sorted. After the first leg driving towards Le Mans and the finish at the Atlantic coast in La Baule the tour left the coastal city this morning no later than 6:30 am when the first car was on its way before the sun was out. Unfortunately, the morning leg again led to the bigger country road and motorways to get to the destination of the first special stage of the day.

Tour Auto 2022 Day 2 ... La Baule to Limoges

We arrived in the capitol of French wine and if you ask French wine lovers probably the wine capitol of the world. Most likely most of the drivers and their co-pilots could enjoy one or a few more glasses of red wine during the dinner to conclude an intense day. Today was one of the days without a track visit but no less than three special stages on closed off roads. As there are specialists for both sorts of competition this is the day for the rally driver rather than the racer.

Tour Auto 2022 Day 3 ... Limoges to Bordeaux

We are almost there... we just finished the fourth and second to last day on our way through France starting in Paris and ending in Andorra tomorrow. Up to now we drove 8 special stages (of which on was cancelled as reported yesterday) and 3 circuits. We have a close competition running in between the Ligier of Mr. John of B and the Ford Escort of Kevin Jones with the Ferrari 365 GTB of the Team Lancksweert and the Porsche SC Group.4 of Jean not far behind. As reported earlier the lead is changing regularly depending whether we are on the track or in the wild on the special stages.

Tour Auto 2022 Day 4 ... Bordeaux to Pau

Who said the French were anti-car? Not us! During the 31st edition of the Tour Auto spectators once again proved that they love beautiful cars. Smiling faces and encouragements were the key-words during these five days spent driving through sublime landscapes between bucolic roads, mountains and vineyards. Spectators flocked to the side of our beautiful French roads, to the public zones, the special stages on closed roads and to the grandstands at the circuits as they came to admire the collector cars and support drivers and co-drivers.

The Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe sprint races at Brands Hatch over the weekend of 30 April – 01 May, were the only international GT or Sports Racing series races to be held in Great Britain in 2020. Thus they were the only opportunity for British fans to see an international series on home soil. There was the added attraction of being able to see the immensely popular multiple motorcycle world champion, Valentino Rossi, racing in a Team WRT Audi R8 LMS, naturally sporting a bright yellow and black livery and carrying his famous 46 race number.

Scuderia Ferrari leaves Imola after the Made in Italy e dell’Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix with a sense of what might have been. The team only picked up 20 points at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit: 12 yesterday in the Sprint and eight today courtesy of a sixth place for Charles Leclerc. Charles saw his podium chances vanish with just over 10 laps remaining when lying third, after he spun at the Variante Gresini. It was a Sunday to forget for Carlos Sainz, who ended up stuck in the gravel at turn 2, following a coming together with Daniel Ricciardo.

In the maiden Miami Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari got both its drivers onto the podium, with Charles Leclerc in second place and Carlos Sainz third. As expected, the race turned out to be a very close fight with the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. It confirmed that the two teams fighting for the win at every race so far, are very closely matched. The Scuderia picked up 33 points today to keep the lead in the Constructors’ classification while Charles heads the Drivers’ standings.

Originally ran from 1927-1957 the long-distance road race was part of the sportscar world championship and both cemented the myth of Alfa Romeo before the war and Ferrari after, both with most of the victories in their period. After Sir Stirling Moss setting the eternal record in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in 1955 accompanied by Denis “Jenks” Jenkinson and the final edition in 1957 once again won by Ferrari with the 315S in the hands of Pierro Taruffi the engines remained silent for 20 years before a revival of enthusiasts came back to do a revival in 1977

The Italian DTM weekend finished empty-handed for the Red Bull Alphatauri AF Corse Ferraris, once again forced to deal with unfortunate incidents that ruled them out of the fight for victory. This time the 488 GT3 Evo 2020s were more competitive in qualifying, with Fraga on the front row and Cassidy on the third. At the start, both cars passed the trap of the Tamburello chicane unscathed, and the Brazilian took the race lead on lap two, just before the Safety Car came into action following an accident at Rivazza.

The 90th running of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race took place over the weekend of 11-12 June, under almost perfect weather conditions, with ambient temperatures in the mid twenties. Although the 24 Hour Race is the main attraction, it is the culmination of a week of activities, not only at the circuit, but in both the town of Le Mans, where scrutineering and the driver’s parade takes place, and in the surrounding district.

Despite the unsettled weather there were some 500 Ferraris in attendance through the course of the day.

The initial seeds of thought for a Concours on Savile Row were first muted in 2019 for an event in 2020, but the pandemic put paid to the idea in both that year and 2021. Thus 2022 saw the inaugural Concours take place on the street that has been the home of high end bespoke tailoring in London for well over 200 years, drawing an analogy with luxury and bespoke coachwork on a number of the cars that were on display. The idea came from Hothouse Media, the publishers of the renowned motoring magazine Octane, in collaboration with the Pollen Estate of which Savile Row is part, with assistance from the Westminster City Council allowing the road to be closed for two days for the event.

Charles Leclerc is back in the winner’s circle after the Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg, to give Scuderia Ferrari its fourth win of the season, the second in a row, after Carlos Sainz finished on the top step in Silverstone last Sunday. Unfortunately, today the Spaniard had to stop with a power unit problem 15 laps from the finish. A brilliant drive left him on the verge of passing Max Verstappen to take second, to secure what would have been a very well-deserved one-two. It was a good way to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the first appearance of the Prancing Horse emblem on the Scuderia’s cars way back in 1932, with the old-style badge displayed on both F1-75s here in Austria.

It has been 4 years that we went to Le Mans for the Classic edition of the 24 hours. After the cancellation of the 2020 event, we had to wait 2 more years to celebrate the 10th edition of this unique race event. 20 years after the first edition in 2002 the Classic has become the biggest premium race event for classic cars in the world going all the way around the clock in 6 different race classes. With 4 more support races before the actual 24 hours and 3 races per grid this sums up to 22 races in addition to the qualifying and practice sessions starting Friday. A whopping number of more than 1000 drivers and about 750 race cars in the entry lists attracted more than 200.000 visitors

After a successful gathering at the venue in 2021, the Ferrari Owners’ Club returned to Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa, a 16th century Grade I listed country house, near Kettering in Northamptonshire, for their Summer Garden Party on Sunday 07 August, which was preceded by the Charles Stanley Concours on the Saturday. A new feature of the concours this year was that all entrants had to complete a circa 15 mile drive-in on the Saturday morning, to prove that their cars were fully functional, road legal and being driven.

Over the last two years a lot of events were cancelled and they had to find a way to keep their sponsors and getting set up the event this year. Some of them struggled more than others but the Classic Days even had more challenges to master as they lost their original event location, the Castle Dyck near Neuss. For many years the picturesque water castle was a perfect backdrop for the German garden party with the Orangery for the concours, an alley for a recognizable round course and the gardens for the camping and pick-nick. When we went to the first Classic Days the garden were just refurbished for the Bundesgartenschau but the castle was still in a sorry state.

The Monterey Car week is back. After missing the last years car week due to the travel restrictions coming into the USA and the cancellation of the 2020 week due to the outbreak of the Covid virus we are finally back to Monterey after three years. Some things have changed since the 2019 edition and some stayed the same. One of the biggest changes is the lack of the Concours on the Avenue on Tuesday in downtown Carmel as the founder unfortunately passed away recently and it looks like nobody took over the baton. The Wednesday will also see some news as the McCall Jet Center party was sold to the automotive lifestyle brand and specialty insurance provider Hagerty who already took over the Amelia Island Concours earlier this year.

And every year one is surprised about the amount of money that changed hands at the end of the week and experts comment how they saw this coming no matter what the result is.

The first striking detail of the Porsche 911 Dakar is its ground clearance, which is 50 millimetres higher than that of a 911 Carrera with sports suspension. And the standard lift system can raise the front and rear ends an additional 30 millimetres. Its ground clearance and ramp angle rival those of conventional SUVs. The lift system is not only used to slowly cross obstacles, but is an integral part of the retuned chassis. The ‘high level’ setting is available for ambitious off-road adventures at speeds of up to 170 km/h. Above that speed, the car automatically lowers back down to its normal level.
