First ever female winner on the Monaco circuit

Monaco, 27-28 May 2000

The  Monaco  circuit,  arguably  the  most  charismatic  Grand  Prix  circuit  in  the  world  hosted  the  Automobile Club  De  Monaco's  second  Grand  Prix  Historique  over  the  weekend  preceding  the  F1  Grand  Prix.  There was  a  six  race  programme  with  both  free  and  timed  practise  sessions,  whilst  there  were  also  three classic  car  auctions  held  over  the  weekend.  Add  in  a  rally  gathering  of  Club  Ferrari  France,  plus  a further privately  organised  Ferrari  group,  and  you  had  a  fine  selection  of  Ferrari  models  of  all  ages  for the enthusiast.

Auctions with a total of 39 Ferraris
The  three  auctions  had  a  total  of  39  Ferraris  between  them,  7  at  the  Poulain  Le  Fur/Sotheby's  on  the Friday  evening,  a  further  14  at  Coys/Barrett-Jackson,  and  18  at  the  Brooks  one  both  held  on  the Saturday. The  range  of  models  offered  covered  a  very  broad  spectrum  of  production,  from  a  166  Inter Stablimenti Farina  coupe,  via  various  fifties  road  and  sports  racing  models,  to  an  F40  LM  and  a  333  SP. From  the results  available  it  would  seem  that  a  number  of  cars  found  new  homes,  including  the  early 250  GT  LWB  TdF  berlinetta  0507GT,  that  had  resided  in  a  Danish  castle  for  twenty  years,  which achieved  $750,000 including buyer's premium, despite its non-standard nose and tail configurations.

"Cavallino Rampante" in three races

For  the  Ferrari  enthusiasts  there  was  a  presence  in  three  races  in  the  programme,  the  largest  number being  in  the  Serie  C  pre-1959  Sports  Car  race.  There  were  a  total  of  twelve  entries,  but  various mechanical problems  reduced  this  to  six  by  the  time  they  formed  up  on  the  grid.  In  the  Serie  B  race  for pre-1952 single  seaters,  there  was  only  a  166  FL  to  uphold  Ferrari  honours,  which  was  2nd  in  class driven  by Patrick  Van  Schoote.  The  star  of  this  race  was  Barrie  Williams  in  an  ERA  Type  A,  who  stalled on  the  grid and  then  carved  his  way  through  the  field  like  a  hot  knife  through  butter,  in  exhuberant  style, to  finish  3rd overall receiving rapturous applause from the appreciative crowd on the slowing down lap.

First ever female winner on the Monaco circuit
The  Serie  C  Sports  Car  race  was  next  on  the  programme,  with  its  sadly  depleted  Ferrari  entry.  This race provided  the  first  ever  female  winner  on  the  Monaco  circuit,  when  Claudia  Huertgen  in  a  Maserati 300  S led  from  start  to  finish,  taking  fastest  lap  in  the  process,  chased  hard  all  the  way  by  Frank  Sytner in  Sir Anthony  Bamford's  250  Testa  Rossa,  that  collected  a  crumpled  pontoon  fender  on  a  backmarker on  its way  to  2nd  overall.  Willie  Green,  in  the  DK  prepared  225  S,  had  suffered  brake  problems  in practise,  but managed  to  maintain  enough  stopping  power  for  the  duration,  to  bring  Sir  Anthony's  1952 Monaco  GP winner home just ahead of Roberto Crippa's 750 Monza.

Ferrari victory by Martin Stretton
The  Serie  D  race  for  pre-1961  Grand  Prix  cars,  was  the  final  one  with  a  Ferrari  presence,  featuring Martin Stretton  in  Nick  Harley's  555  Supersqualo,  and  David  Vine  in  his  625.  Martin  Stretton  claimed  pole position,  and  led  from  the  start  chased  hard  by  Nigel  Corner's  Maserati  250  F,  until  the  latter succumbed to  gearbox  problems  on  the  fifth  lap.  The  race  had  to  be  stopped  on  the  eighth  lap  as  oil had  been deposited  at  St  Devote  causing  a  number  of  spins,  but  this  didn't  stop  Martin  Stretton  taking  a commanding win in great style, to score the only Ferrari victory of the weekend.

It  may  be  virtually  impossible  to  overtake  at  Monaco  in  a  Modern  F1  car,  but  there  were  plenty  of
overtaking  manoeuvres  amongst  the  historic  participants,  and  some  spectacular  examples  of  car  control in  sometimes  virtually  priceless  machinery  that  was  a  joy  to  witness.  With  perfect  weather  conditions, the unique atmosphere of Monaco and spectacular racing, the next running can't come soon enough!
