The Monterey historic gathering is high car auction season in California,
with a quartet of auctions from the major houses through the week.
Although there is no Christies auction this year, after the closure of their
motor division, the pressure on time is still high as David Gooding has
extended his auction to spread over two evenings. These auctions will be
seen as a barometer for the collector car market in the current worldwide
economic downturn, so there is doubtless some trepidation as to how
they will fare.
Bonhams & Butterfields – 15 August
To be held in conjunction with the prestigious Quail Motorsports
Gathering, a varied line-up of machinery is on offer together with a
selection of memorabilia and motoring artwork. Highlights include the
unique 1960 Jaguar E2A Prototype, the “missing link” between the
factory’s D-Type and E-Type models, which was driven by the likes of Sir
Jack Brabham, Dan Gurney and Bruce McLaren. Then there is a 1939
Ecurie Nice Talbot-Lago T150 C SS, a 1930 Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo
6C-1750 Gran Sport and a 1913 Isotta Fraschini Tipo KM with a 10.6-litre
engine with chain-drive, amongst the cars to go across the block.

Kruse International – 15 August
The Kruse auction takes place in conjunction with Concorso Italiano at the
Marina Airport, with 53 lots on offer, of which 25 are the special edition
2007 Ford Hertz Shelby Mustang GT-H Convertibles. There is also a trio of
‘80s Stutz models, a trio of ’69 Camaro Z28s in RS, JL8 and X33 forms,
together with a Boss Mustang and Plymouth Hemi Cuda from 1970. It is
rumoured that a Ferrari 410 Superamerica will also cross the block, but at
the time of writing it does not appear in their list of cars offered.

RM Auctions – 15/16 August
The Portola Hotel & Spa in central downtown Monterey is the traditional
venue for the RM auction, and this year is no exception with an expansive
and diverse range of around 180 cars and a selection of automobilia,
comprising mainly of race posters, on offer. Some of their feature cars are
a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe, a 1933 Rolls Royce
Phantom II Special Town Car, a 1962 Chaparral 1 Sports Racing Car and
a Chrysler based 1957 Dual-Ghia Convertible. There are also numerous
custom cars and hot rods, Italian exotica, including Lamborghini Miuras in
P400, P400 S and P400 SV configurations, plus no less than 25 Ferraris,
including a 250 GT “TdF” berlinetta, 0563 GT, a 250 GT SWB berlinetta,
3087 GT, and a 400 Superamerica coupe.

Russo & Steele – 15/16 August
The Russo & Steele auction will be held at the Marriott Hotel in downtown
Monterey, just a short distance from the concurrently run RM auction,
featuring 150 lots of sports and muscle cars. Amongst the sports cars on
offer are a 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spider, a Lamborghini Miura S from the
same year, Ferrari’s offering from the same era in the form of 365 GTB/4
“Daytona”, and a 1966 Bizzarrini Strada 5300. A real rarity is the 1965
Bentley SSSC-2 Exhibition Chassis Club Racer, a Rolls Royce
apprentices built show car, which was subsequently secretly sold and
turned into a competition car. Amongst the muscle cars are a 1970 Dodge
Challenger R/T convertible 440 6-Pack, a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR
Fastback, plus Mustang and Corvette race cars, notwithstanding some hot
rods.

Gooding & Company – 16/17 August
Among the 130 or so cars that will cross the block at the Equestrian
Centre at Pebble Beach, are the ex-Donald Healey 1934 Triumph
Dolomite 8C-2400 GS, the rare 1938 ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Alfa Romeo 6C
and the original 1914 Stutz Series E Bearcat. There will also be a varied
selection of fourteen Bugattis, ranging from a 1926 Type 52 short nose
“Baby Bugatti” to a current Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, twelve of which are
from the renowned Williamson Collection, including a 1938 Bugatti Type
57SC Atalante Coupe, an ex-Louis Chiron 1928 Bugatti Type 35B and a
1931 Bugatti Type 55. They have the same number of Ferraris on offer,
ranging from a 1950 166 MM Touring berlinetta to a 1991 348 tb, with a
500 TRC and 250 GT LWB California along the way.
