Villa d'Este Aprile 22nd, 2007

Lake Como once again looks back on two glorious days under the banner of extraordinary automotive design. At the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este held from 20 to 22 April, 53 classic cars spanning the period from 1919 to 1971 lined up in eight competition classes before the critical gaze of the jury as well as the public. Lorenzo Ramaciotti, President of the Jury, lauded this unique gathering of automotive works of art against the backdrop of the world- famous Grand Hotel Villa d'Este. It was the ninth staging of the Concorso under the patronage of the BMW Group.

The Awards

The Trofeo BMW Group went to the Mercedes-Benz SSK from the year 1930. This SSK was produced in England by coachbuilder Willi White based on designs by Count Felice Trossi. It is one of very few Mercedes-Benz SSK models to feature special bodywork. The man who commissioned the design and the colour of the car earned it the nickname of "Black Prince". This model is part of the Ralph Lauren Collection.

The Coppa d'Oro Villa d'Este public award, the main prize decided by visitors, went to the Bugatti 57C Cabriolet Voll & Ruhrbeck of 1939. The car's chassis was one of the last to be delivered to German Bugatti importer Noll of Düsseldorf before the outbreak of the Second World War. Voll & Ruhrbeck were commissioned with constructing a special body for the chassis. The Bugatti was subsequently owned by Norwegian Olympic ice-skating champion Sonja Heine. Following a complete restoration, the Bugatti was making its first European appearance in its original version. James A. Patterson is the current owner.

The Trofeo BMW Italia (Public Referendum at Villa Erba) was awarded to the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Flying Star from the year 1931. Carrozzeria Touring of Milan built a special body for the Alfa Romeo which has gone down in motoring history as the "Flying Star". It was with this model that Mrs Josette Pozzo won the Coppa d'Oro di Villa d'Este in the 1931 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. 76 years on, the Alfa Romeo Flying Star has not only returned to the historic site of its major triumph but has also claimed a further prize as the winner of the Trofeo BMW Italia. The car hails from the collection of Arturo Keller.

The Trofeo FIVA for the best-kept car went to the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Spider Zagato of 1929 owned by Henri Chambon. With its lightweight body, this model seemed tailor-made for racing and went on to win the 1929 Mille Miglia. The prize for the furthest journey, presented by the Automobile Club Como, went to the BMW 335 Cabriolet Autenrieth. Per Viberg set out in his four-door cabriolet from the north of Norway in a blizzard and drove it all the way down to sunny Como. The Trofeo Rolls-Royce for the most elegant coachwork on a Rolls-Royce was awarded to the Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental 2 door Hooper of Stefan Schörghuber dating back to 1932. Just three examples of this two-seater were built on the chassis of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental.

Very much in keeping with the tradition of the competition, the last six years have featured a design prize for the best contemporary concept cars. The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este Design Award went to the Ferrari P4/5 Pininfarina. Precisely 400 units of the sensational Ferrari Enzo supercar were built in Maranello. But for US film producer and stockmarket guru James M. Glickenhaus, this was not exclusive enough. The Ferrari collector commissioned Carrozzeria Pininfarina of Turin with the construction of a special body based on a standard Enzo. The shape of the P4/5 body recalls the legendary Daytona- winning Ferrari 330 P4 of 1967.

Some other highlights

Ferrari 375 MM, 1954
This is the 12th out of a total production run of 15 375 Mille Miglia Ferraris. Originally built in March 1954 as the Pinin Farina Spider, it was destined for Luigi Chinetti in the USA. However, the Ferrari factory then sold the car to Italian film producer Roberto Rossellini in Rome. In 1955 he commissioned Sergio Scaglietti in Modena with giving it a particularly attractive coupé body. Ten years later, Rossellini sold the car to a Sicilian from Palermo. At this point the metallic grey body was repainted in military green. In 1970 the one-off model made its way from Palermo to Paris. Its current owner acquired it in 1995 and had it completely restored. The car was then successfully exhibited at many events and went on to win the "Best of Show" award at the Ferrari Club of America National Concours in Toronto, as well as the Luigi Chinetti Memorial Trophy.

Heading home - the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Flying Star
As they had done for the Isotta-Fraschini 8B and the Fiat Type 522C, Carrozzeria Touring of Milan also designed a special body for the Alfa-Romeo 6C 1750 GS, which was to go down in motoring history as the "Flying Star". With this model Mrs Josette Pozzo won the Coppa d'Oro di Villa d'Este at the 1931 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. After a gap of 76 years, the Alfa Romeo Flying Star returns to the historic site of its greatest success.

An Italian in German clothing - the Bugatti 57 C, 1939
The Concorso d'Eleganza will show the Bugatti 57 C in its original condition for the first time in Europe. The chassis was one of the last to be sold before the Second World War and it was the last Bugatti to be delivered to Germany before the outbreak of war. Its owner handed the chassis over to Voll & Ruhrbeck, one of the most modern coachbuilders of the time, with the commission to design a highly aerodynamic roadster. Later the Bugatti 57 C belonged to the famous Norwegian ice queen and multiple Olympic medallist Sonja Henie.
In 1969 the Voll & Ruhrbeck body was removed from the chassis. It wasn't until 2002 that the owner was able to unite the original chassis and original body again and have the entire vehicle completely restored.

The "Black Prince" - the Mercedes-Benz SSK, 1930
Motor sport enthusiast and successful car racer Count Carlo Felice Trossi produced a design sketch at the end of the 1920s showing his idea of an aerodynamically styled car. Willi White, a little known coachbuilder at the time, implemented these sketches to create the so-called "Black Prince". The Trossi SSK is one of the very rare Mercedes Benz SSK models to feature special bodywork. After extensive restoration this Mercedes-Benz SSK has already raked in countless prizes and will be mark its debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza this year. The car belongs to the Ralph Lauren Collection.

An icon, a homage
Two vehicles in this year's Concorso d'Eleganza are particularly eloquent symbols of the philosophy behind the event - the fusion of aesthetic automotive styling past and future. They are the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé and the BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia 2006. The former is the legendary racing car of the late 1930s, while the other is a homage to this legend and the men who devoted their passion and engineering skills to steering this car to victory on the race tracks of Europe. Following its premiere last year before the international media, the BMW Concept Coupé goes on show before the public for the first time at Lake Como. "With the Concept Coupé we are delighted to be able to exhibit one of the most interesting vehicles of our time at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este," said Holger Lapp at the Geneva Show press conference.

Rolls-Royce presents its Phantom Drophead Coupé
As in previous years, Rolls-Royce will again be attending the Concorso with a rather special model in tow. An unusual experimental car, the 100EX also stopped by at Villa d'Este during its 2004 world tour. Since then the design and development teams have turned the concept into a production model. In 2007 Rolls-Royce will present the Phantom Drophead Coupé at Villa d'Este in the wake of its European premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. The two-door, four- seater convertible is a less formal rendition of the classic Rolls-Royce design. Technically it combines a lightweight yet extremely rigid aluminium space frame with the slender, elegant body of a drophead coupé.

The latest concept cars and prototypes

The competition for the latest concept cars and prototypes also turns the weekend at the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este on Lake Como into an outstanding event. In contrast to an exhibition, the 13 vehicles, actually 15 since two models were displayed outside the competion the BMW Mille Miglia Concept Coupé and the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé, can be seen under natural conditions and they are put through their paces to demonstrate roadworthiness when they drive in the parade. One of this year's highlights is the Maserati GS Zagato which will be celebrating its world premiere at the Concorso.

This year saw the presentation of a panoply of famous names and the onlookers were again spoilt for choice when it came to decision time for the outright winner:

World premiere at Lake Como: Maserati GS Zagato
Famous coachbuilder Carrozzeria Zagato has a long tradition of putting bodies on Maserati chassis. Following on from the world premiere of the Ferrari 575 GT Z at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2006, this year the Maserati GS Zagato will be presented on the public stage for the first time.

Sports car with attitude: Rinspeed eXaxis
The unusual high-tech creations of Frank M. Rinderknecht have become a standard feature at the Geneva Motor Show held in March. Design and concept experts Rinspeed of Zumikon celebrated their thirtieth anniversary by unveiling the eXasis in Switzerland, created in cooperation with Bayer Material Science. Particularly innovative features are the transparent body, the seats configured behind each other and the engine powered by bioethanol. Thanks to the lightweight construction, the eXasis only weighs 750 kg, giving a power-to-weight ratio of five kilograms per hp.

Convertible with wings: Renault Nepta
The Nepta design study presented at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006 attracted a great deal of attention among the public. In particular, the gullwing doors measuring just under four metres in length were an especially impressive feature of the four-door convertible. The Nepta Concept Study embodies Renault's vision of an elegant, powerful luxury convertible in the future.

Two-seater with a view: Saab Aero X
The Saab Aero X Concept Car is a two-seater coupé where the roof and door, including the panorama windscreen, can be lifted up and forward to allow passengers and driver to get in and out. The driver is provided with a 180 degree field of vision because there are no B-pillars to obstruct the view. The front is designed in typical Saab style. The car is powered by a 2.8 litre bioethanol engine with twin turbocharger generating 400 hp.

Big cat with style: Jaguar C-XF
The Jaguar C-XF showed exactly what the new Jaguar models should look like when it was premiered at this year's Detroit Motor Show. The distinctive lines of the C-XF are intended to turn the Jaguar into a genuine British big cat.

Roadster based on the Panda: Bertone Barchetta
Nuncio Bertone created a Barchetta in 1947 based on the Fiat 500 and he successfully competed in a number of races. In commemoration of this former creation and to celebrate the company's 95th anniversary, Bertone presented the Bertone Roadster based on a Fiat Panda 100 HP at this year's Geneva Motor Show. The metal panels were also hand-crafted for the Bertone Roadster Concept in the best tradition of bodywork construction.

Hydrogen car with joystick: Giugiaro VAD.HO, 2007
The VAD.HO, presented by Giugiaro at the Geneva Motor Show, is in many ways a very unusual concept car. Access for the two passengers who sit behind each other is provided through the gullwing doors opening at the side. The car with carbon panelling is powered by a 260 hp hydrogen engine along the same lines as the BMW Hydrogen 7 presented recently.

Concept with star: Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive
Daimler-Chrysler presented the Ocean Drive at the Detroit Motor Show 2007 at the beginning of the year with the intention of reinvigorating the tradition of the four-door Mercedes-Benz convertible. The study has an impressive profile with the striking radiator, LED headlights and taillights, and two-tone paintwork. The concept car is based on the Mercedes 600 S.

Sports car with four-wheel drive: Opel GTC
Opel sprang a surprise with the sporty, elegant coupé at the Geneva Motor Show 2007. The four-wheel drive model created a particularly striking visual impression with the vertical air inlets and LED technology. Opel intends to use the GTC to reunite the traditional idea of the coupé with the future language of design.

Coupé with two hearts: Toyota FT-HS
Toyota presented its vision of a future sports car with full hybrid system in the rear-engined FT-HS coupé. Toyota's designers have succeeded in melding the sharp edges and soft overhangs to create a masterpiece in white. The coupé turns into a Spider at the touch of a button if you want to drive open to the elements. The study is powered by a combination of 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine and an electric motor.

Specially tailored to customers' requirements: Ferrari P4/5 Pininfarina
Precisely 400 units of the sensational Supercar Ferrari Enzo were built in Maranello. However, this was not exclusive enough for American film producer and stock-market guru James M. Glickenhaus. The Ferrari collector commissioned Carrozzeria Pininfarina in Turin to build a unique special body based on a standard Enzo. The Special Projects Team from Pininfarina under the management of Paolo Garella carried out this expensive project costing 4 million dollars in a construction period lasting just over a year. The shape of the body resembles the legendary Daytona winner Ferrari 330 P4 from 1967.

Saloon with atmosphere: Ford Iosis, 2005
At the international Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 2005, Ford presented the new language of design for future Ford models in the Ford Iosis concept study. An electric motor opens two gullwing doors with opposing hinges to afford access to the interior. The outside of the vehicle is defined by strong wheel arches, a dynamic side line and a striking front profile. The interior is defined by the unusual atmosphere created by innovative materials, such as neoprene, and fluid light.

Luxury product with glass roof: Nissan Infiniti
Nissan's premium brand Infiniti unveiled the coupé concept design study at the Detroit Motor Show 2006. It has a glass roof covering the entire body. The outer skin creates the effect of polished aluminium and the distinctively shaped LED headlights and taillights give the study a very technical appearance.

Outside the classification: BMW Mille Miglia Concept Coupé
Outside the competition, the brands BMW and Rolls-Royce each presented an example of their design and technical expertise.
After a flying visit to the Mille Miglia last year, the BMW Concept Coupé was presented in the public arena for the first time. The automobile pays homage to the racing legend BMW 328 Mille Miglia. BMW dominated the 1940 Mille Miglia with this car and came out overall winner.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé
As in previous years, Rolls-Royce will also take part in the Concorso with a special vehicle. In 2007, the brand is presenting the Phantom Drophead Coupé at the Villa d´Este. The two-door, four-seater convertible is a less formal interpretation of the classic Rolls-Royce design. From a technical perspective, this automobile combines a lightweight, incredibly stiff aluminium spaceframe with the lean and elegant body of a drophead coupé.

The future of automotive design could be glimpsed in the competition for contemporary concept cars, with a line-up of 13 cutting-edge designs providing a taster of tomorrow's cars. Following on from last year there was a world premiere among the contestants again: Carrozzeria Zagato took the wraps off the Maserati GS Zagato before the public for the first time. The BMW Group, meanwhile, presented (hors concours) the public debut of the Concept Coupé Mille Miglia 2006. Following its appearance on Lake Como, this homage to the winning car of 1940 - the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé - will not be seen again until it goes on display in the BMW Museum next year. The extent of public interest was reflected in the crowds that thronged the grounds of Villa Erba on Sunday. On this extensive site next to Lake Como, auto enthusiasts were able to survey the line- up of classic four-wheelers and concept cars as well as viewing the special exhibitions "90 Years of the BMW Brand" and "Automobile design by Giovanni Michelotti".
