The Finest In Historic Cars, Food, Wine And Luxury Goods

In its Second Year at Quail Lodge, the Event Takes Place
on Friday, August 13, 2004

Carmel Valley - July 1, 2004

A much-anticipated highlight of the Monterey Peninsula's annual August Vintage Car Week, The Quail - A Motorsports Gathering, will provide an intimate and glamorous historic sports and racing car showcase at Carmel Valley’s Quail Lodge on Friday, August 13, 2004.  The full-day event, which debuted in 2003, is not only for connoisseurs of extraordinary classic cars, but also of excellent food, wine and luxury auction collectibles.

"The Quail is the most intimate of the Vintage Car events on the Monterey Peninsula," said Lawson Little, Vice President of Quail Lodge.  "It reflects the distinctive style of Quail Lodge by infusing warmth, intimacy, creativity and exceptional quality into a world-class vintage car event."

In 2004, The Quail will pay tribute to the famous Italian race, the Mille Miglia, an annual road race for sports cars built between 1927 and 1957.  A selection of 125 of the world's most notable historic sports and racing cars, vintage motorcycles, and one-of-a-kind Hispano-Suizas from the 1930s and '40s will also be on display.  Specific models include

· 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C2300 Corto Spyder “Rimoldi,” owned by the Alfa

Romeo factory originally and named after its owner from 1930s to 1980s

· J.B. Nethercutt’s 1931 Bugatti Dubos Coupe, perhaps the most important

Bugatti discovered in recent years

· Bruce Meyer’s Silver 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa 625/250 TRC, raced by John

von Neumann, Richie Ginther and Ken Miles

· Fred Bohlander’s 1952 XKC 024 Jaguar, an extremely rare original C type

raced by Phil Hill in 1953 in Texas’ Lone Star 200

· Yoshiho Matsuda’s 1957 Ferrari 250 TR Serial Number 0714/TR, believed to

be one of the most original 250 Testa Rossas in existence

· In addition, 10 vintage cars that raced in the Mille Miglia, the famous Italian

city-to-city race between 1927 to 1957 and 20 Ferraris, the marque car of this year’s Vintage Car Week, will be displayed at the event

The only portion of Monterey’s Vintage Car Week that also showcases fine food and wines, guests can savor European and California fare prepared by renowned Chef Cal Stamenov at The Quail as they stroll through the vintage car show.  Cuisine displayed will represent the flavors of Italy, France, Germany and Northern California, with gelato and espresso carts, fresh breads and cheeses, salads, quiche, bouillabaisse, German sausages, desserts and much more. Celebrated wines from Bernardus Winery, Clicquot Wines, Loosen Bros. and English Ales Brewery will compliment the cuisine.

The evening's centerpiece will be the renowned Bonhams & Butterfields Auction featuring jewelry and automobilia, concluding with the sale of historic cars, which commences after The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.

A prelude to The Quail, on Tuesday, August 10 and Wednesday, August 11, will be the traditional Quail Rally, a two-day rally of about 30 enthusiastic drivers and their passengers along the incredibly scenic back roads of Monterey County. Fabulous pit stop activities and feasts are promised en route.  The Rally's grand finale is the California Highway Patrol escorting the cars to Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival gala at the Monterey Jet Center -- one of the hottest tickets during Vintage Car Week.  The Quail Rally is designed as a charitable event, whose motto is "good friends, good food and a good drive for a good cause."

Nestled on 850 acres in the heart of sunny Carmel Valley, the 97-room Quail Lodge enjoyed a comprehensive makeover in 2003, bringing new luster to all guest rooms, public areas and the spa. New facilities and amenities were added, including a new golf clubhouse overlooking the 18-hole championship golf course, clubhouse restaurant, Wellness Center and trails through the remarkably beautiful environment of lakes, lush gardens and rolling hills.
