Talacrest in the person of the company’s colourful founder John Collins, a self confessed Ferrari fanatic from an early age, celebrated 30 years in the classic Ferrari business, not with a traditional open house event, but with the publication of a book covering the business that the company has conducted over the period. This includes the purchase and sale of over 1600 examples, with a total value in excess of a billion pounds. It all started with capital borrowed from friends at the pub in 1987, after he saw a dealer make a handsome profit on his pride and joy Testarossa that he sold him when hit by recession, and since then he has bought and sold some of the most important and iconic Ferrari models produced, including no less than eight 250 GTOs, together with outstanding examples of other marques. A measure of the success of the business was the receipt of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade, in 2016.

The book is not a list of the cars that have been traded by the company, but has interesting stories about the cars, along with some intriguing anecdotal stories and insights into the way the deals came about, the people involved and the business ethics, or not, as the case may be. A story in point relates to how he sold a car to a client, who thought that he was paying over the odds, and once the deal was done John immediately offered him $100,000 more, before he had even paid for it! Buy the book and turn to P.222 to find out more.

The book also covers his early years as a model and photo-journalist, the Talacrest polo team (he also played for Scotland), his foray into the pop and rock memorabilia scene when he took a sabbatical from the classic car business at the turn of the century, and much more besides. It is not a book that you need to start at P.1 and read through to the end, but one that you can open at almost any page and find an interesting and entertaining story, together with a selection of great images of the cars.

It is published by Ginger Beer Promotions Ltd, and printed in full colour on high quality paper, running to 352 Pages in a large hardback format, 25.5cms W. X 30.5cms H., weighing in at some 3kgs. All profits from the sale of the book will go to John’s preferred charities, The Racehorse Sanctuary and Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
