Palm Beach, 29th of January, 2017

Rained out...The 26th Cavallino Classic came to an end today with the final multi marque concours at the Mar-a-Lago Club in the south of Palm Beach. The Classic Sports Sunday is always a great way to finalize the CC in style at the luxurious retreat of Donald Trump and this year’s edition was even more in the focus being the property of the new elected president. Jokes where made upfront about Winter White House or White House South but to the surprise of all attending guests the security measures did not differ in the slightest from the previous year.

What was a surprise for all those travelling to Palm Beach out of the colder regions of the USA or even Europe was the weather that was not what one would expect from the winter domicile of the rich and famous as it rained all day. Many owners of the top cars had to make the decision early in the morning whether they want to bring their prices possessions to the wet lawn behind the main building, even more so the open sports racers as those of the featured marque Maserati. The famous streamline Birdcage was brought over by restorer Paul Russell, who borrowed a fisherman suit the get there at least partly dry. One does not see too often a jacket and tie under these sort of heavy rain gear.

First car on the lawn was the fabulous Delage from the Patterson collection, a former Pebble Beach winning car in all white and those who missed the arrival of the car never had a detailed look at the car as it was covered all day although nobody would blame the detailer to avoid a tough cleaning job after a whole day of rain.

One after the other the cars arrived and took their spot at the green but it became clear quit early that the number of cars to be seen this day might be a little bit smaller than intended. Just a few of the older Ferrari from the previous day at the Breakers were lined-up and the owners disappeared under the umbrellas at the pool house for a well-deserved coffee. The judges took a short round to look at the cars but as at least the Ferrari were well known from the day before the judging was done rather quick before the “crowd” went to the ballroom for the lunch and the prize giving.

During the lunch break just a few interested guests from the county club had a look at the cars but due to the rain coming and going nobody lasted too long outside.

Once the prizes were given the owners came back with a lot of silverware to store in the cars and to leave to the nearby trailers or back to the hotel for a final farewell until coming back next year for the 27th edition of the annual Ferrari Meeting.

Remains the duty to announce todays winning car, the 2017 Mar-a-Lago Best of Show: as expected by many in advance it was the sensational 1933 Delage D8S Roadster by De Villars from the Patterson Collection restored to perfection by RM Restorations prior to its win at the Pebble Beach Concours 2010.

With this small preview gallery from today’s Classic Sports Sunday we want to conclude our “live coverage” of the CC26, more detailed galleries will follow the next days
