Monterey, 17th of August, 2016

Today the international auction houses opened their display for the upcoming sales in Monterey. Both Gooding & Company and RM Sotheby´s have upped their game again in their main sale of the year, more than ever multimillion dollar lots will be for sale this weekend, not to mention the 8-figures head liners of the sales. Gooding & Company has several very interesting Ferraris on sale with a Competition 250 GT LWB California Spider and two 250 SWBs. Even more impressive is the 166 MM originally built as a Touring Barchetta but modified by Zagato to a Coupe later one. Not seen for decades the car is presented in almost untouched condition making it very difficult to decide what to do with the car when bought this weekend. One could either preserve it in the current condition with an in period modification of restore it either to the former Touring specification or as one-off Zagato.

But not only Ferrari reach the multimillion, two extremely sought after examples of Alfa Romeo and Bugatti are being on offer with the 8C 2300 Monza and the T55 Roadster both looking for new homes. The Monza is very well known in historic racing and would make a great addition to every race weekend whereas the Bugatti might be more often shown on the lawn at an international concours.

RM Sotheby´s were again in the Portola Plaza Hotel in Monterey centre but with a lot of refurbishment and construction in the complex the display and auction room was set up in a huge tent on the piazza behind the hotel. Just as Gooding Ferrari and pre-war cars dominate the display. No less than 5 extremely high valued cars with the prancing horse are set up in the lobby of the hotel overlooked by one of the most valuable cars of this week’s sales. Rarely coming to the market an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Touring Spider of the Sam Mann collection might become the top lot of the week, it is estimated at about the same price range as the Le Mans winning Jaguar D-Type long nose of the Ecurie Ecosse. RM Sotheby´s is also particular strong on Shelby Cobras with no less than 4 examples including a duo of the Click Collection featuring his race Cobras and several Mustang.

After visiting the auction previews it was time for the annual McCall Jet Center party. Being one of the social highlights of the week the tickets are usually sold out well in advance. On Wednesday evening the local car spotters look for the best places near the Jet Aviation Center when the parking lots fill up with Supercars, the usual traffic jam might only be topped in value by town passing’s of the Mille Miglia. Once all the visitors have found their parking spot the field in front of the air hangar fills up pretty fast, it seems that even more visitors came than in previous years, although the fact that just one hangar instead of two was used might also give a slightly wrong impression. The field is packed with cars and planes from different eras ranging from the sponsors new jets and sports cars to the war birds and classics. In a very relaxed atmosphere the numerous guests can talk cars and enjoy cocktails and champagne in the sunset to end another day in the hectic car week.

Tomorrow the Concours cars could be seen the first time when the annual tour is held. As mentioned earlier due to the forest fire near highway one down to Big Sur the tour is relocated to a first loop as usually into the hinterland and then another loop within the 17-miles-drive before being on display during lunch in Carmel.

Tomorrow we will also have a look at the Bonhams auction preview and if there is enough time at Mecum.
