This year’s Tour Auto is on its way to the destination in Marseille. After the scrutineering the day before with the check of the cars, the safety equipment and the paperwork finally the cars are on the road and the track.

Very early in the morning (6:15 am) the first cars from the competition plateau 3 left the Grand Palais to the official start at Chateau Vaux le Vicomte, due to the unpredictable traffic in the French capitol this first leg was neutralized, the official timekeeping just started at the chateau, where a small breakfast formed the basis for a long day.

Tour Auto 2014 - Day 3 ... Mulhouse - Aix-les-Bains

Thursday was the longest day of this year’s Tour Auto. After 475 km, two special stages in the morning and the races at the Circuit du Bresse the third day ended at the spa resort of Aix-les-Baines at the Lac du Bourget. For the first special stage at Montbeliard the Tour had to take the motorway to go South-West for about 70 kilometers adding to the high amount of kilometres the crews had to take under their wheels. This is not uncommon on the TA to have these junctions between interesting spots for the high speed trial on closed roads. After the chase over the small country roads the tour led through a canyon, due to the early morning sun just a few sun rays found their way over the surrounding mountains of the Jura. After the chilly temperatures down there the road climbed up so the participants could enjoy the drive in perfect sunshine.

Tour Auto 2014 - Day 4 ... Aix-les-Bains - Valence

The second to last stage of this year’s Tour Auto led from Aix-les-Bains to Valence, capitol of the département Drome. Situated in the region of the Rhone-Alps this day was expected to have some nice hillside roads and the participants were not left disappointed. As today there was no track racing in compensation no less than three special stages led the tour through the twisty mountain roads of the region. Although this was the shortest leg of this year’s Tour Auto the lack of highway miles and the slower speed in the mountains did not make this day much shorter than the other ones.

With total driving times of 10 hours a day over a full working week the TA is certainly one of the most demanding rallies in the historic car circus but also one of the most satisfying.

The second round of the 2014 European Le Mans Series was held at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola over the weekend of 17 – 18 May, whose great elevation changes as it swoops through the hillside, were in sharp contrast to Round 1 at the virtually flat Silverstone circuit. The event attracted 38 entries and 37 starters, after Team Ukraine didn’t appear, to a do battle in three classes over a beautifully warm and sunny weekend. There were 9 starters in the main LMP2 class, and 14 each in the two GT classes, LMGTE for GT2 specification cars, and GTC for GT3 specification cars. In terms of numbers Ferrari 430s in both GT2 and GT3 form were the largest in number, filling nearly half the grid with 18 starters.

Monaco is without doubt the most famous “circuit” in the Grand Prix calendar ... becomes show place for the Historic GP ... Appetizer

The temporary race track in the principality of Monaco is without doubt the most famous “circuit” in the Grand Prix calendar, if not even within all race series. Since 1929 the best racing drivers of every generation came to Monaco to measure with the tricky wormed roads in the street canyons at the Cote d´Azure, even the most talented having “their moments” at the unforgiving narrow track. Where a mistake on other tracks might lead into the gravel the race in Monaco today ends in the guardrails or even in the harbour back in the days as Alberto Ascari did in his Lancia in 1955.

Mille Miglia ... “Corso piu bella del mondo”

There is a lot written on the most famous race in the world, following the red arrows through Italy over 1000 miles, back in the glorious era of road racing all the greats came to challenge the long distance race, mostly with Italian winners on Italian cars. After the last race in 1957 it just took 20 years to resurrect the Mille Miglia as a historic rally in the spirit of the origin, open for those cars running the original race as a regularity event.

California Dreaming Exhibition – Museo Ferrari

A new exhibition opened at the Museo Ferrari in Maranello in April 2014, and is planned to run through to the end of the year. The theme is essentially Ferrari in the USA, very apt in the 60th anniversary year of official imports to the country, with particular emphasis on the state of California, in light of the recent launch of the new California T model, hence the exhibition title “California Dreaming”. The start of the new exhibition was coincidental with the inauguration of the newly laid out space and information centre in front of the museum, and was attended by Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, together with the Mayor of Maranello.

Visitors from around the world once again flocked to Lake Como in their thousands at the weekend to experience the parades of exclusive classic vehicles at the tradition-laden beauty contest for historic cars and motorcycles. The jury presented this year’s Trofeo BMW Group for “Best of Show” to the Maserati 450 S from 1956. Le Musee des 24 Heures

The automobile museum at Le Mans has recently undergone a total revamp of the interior layout, with new galleries and new exhibits, portraying the history of the famous 24 Hour Race and also the evolution of the car itself. The new layout is essentially divided into six specific areas, which are in sequence as one enters the museum, each with its own theme, plus a temporary exhibition area. At the moment, and until September this year, the temporary exhibition celebrates Matra, with a trio of sports racing models and a F1 car as part of the display.

24 Heures du Mans - Porsche comeback without happy ending !

Germany 2 - Japan 1, no not the FIFA World Cup, but the podium for the 82nd running of the 24 Heures du Mans, when Audi triumphed for the 13th time at La Sarthe, bringing two of its three cars home in the top two positions, whilst Toyota, who had won the two opening rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship, had to be content with 3rd overall. However, it was not an easy victory for Audi, and particularly their mechanics, as after the # 1 car was destroyed in a horrific high speed accident in the Porsche Curves in the Wednesday evening practice session, whilst being driven by Loic Duval, it was necessary to rebuild (what was left of) the car into a new tub.
