Pebble Beach, 19th of August 2012

The Monterey Classic Car Week found its final with the Concours d´Elegance at the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Traditionally held on the third Sunday in August this was already the 62th edition of the most prestigious Concours in the world. 225 cars in not less than 28 classes were presented at the 18th hole of the famous Golf Course at the Monterey Peninsula. Beside the regular classes ranging from the Edwardian era to the post-war years both in American and European cars this year's concours featured the special classes of the Maharaja cars, the featured models of Mercer, Fiat, the 50th anniversary of the AC Cobra plus the coachwork of Saoutchik.

Before the Concours the first appearance of the entrants was the Tour d´Elegance on Thursday morning. After the restoration became more and more important for the results at the concours not few had the impression that some of the entered cars would not make more than the way from the trailer to the lawn and the ramp and so several years ago the Tour was introduced. All the entrants have the possibility to show their car in perfect running condition and a participation gives an advantage in case of a level score at the concours.

So many of the cars line up early in the morning in front of the Gooding&Company auction tent at the trailer park to the start of the Tour. This is also the first chance to glimpse a look at the entered car and spot some of the favorites for the awards. For some cars these are the first miles on their own wheels as many cars just finished restoration days before but this is far more than a duty as the Tour leads down highway 1 at the coast giving the best view and photo opportunity at the coastline. Surprisingly few people are seen on the way to the turning point at Big Sur, just the famous Bixby Bridge is well visited by photographers waiting for the three groups of cars coming by. Later the cars park for the lunch stop in the town centre of Carmel-by-the-Sea surrounded by the crowd before returning to the grounds of Pebble Beach. This year's Tour d´Elegance was sunny, unusual for the morning at the sea as the previous years were foggy and overcast by tradition.

The Concours started early on Sunday morning at 6 am when the first cars entered the lawn and as in previous years there were already many people waiting for them to be set up by the countless volunteers on the show field. The weather was typical for August at the coast with some fog early in the morning and mild temperatures and beside a short sunny period around noon the sky remained overcast for the rest of the day. This did not take away the many spectators as one had the impression that the field even filled up earlier this year as it was already crowded well before the official opening of the field for the public. The owners were busy preparing the cars for the judges including international designer of the large manufacturers, marque experts and former race drivers who had again the agony of choice to pick out the class winners of the high quality entries. Even regular visitors for the last decades were impressed that this event attracts so many superb cars after all this years that were never seen before and even when one thinks he has seen all there is something new to discover.

The special theme of the Maharaja cars was one of the highlights of this year's concours and divided in two classes, Rolls-Royce and others. Being a British Crown Colony at the time and with Rolls-Royces reputation for building some of the best cars in the world (especially with the Silver Ghost) it was not a surprise that these cars were the first choice of the Maharajas. Several different variations of bodywork could be seen at Pebble ranging from formal tourers to sportive torpedos. Sir Michael Kadoorie brought a Phantom I Torpedo equipped with two guns on the passenger side, not unusual at the time when hunting was one of the preferred amusements of the Indian Royalty. But not just wealthy collectors brought their treasures to Pebble but also real Maharajas were present with their cars. The oldest RR was brought by the Maharaja family of Udaipur, a 1924 Rolls-Royce 20HP by Barker but the owner himself might have been the most photographed person during the weekend. The most famous of the Maharaja Rolls-Royce was without doubt the “Star of India”, a 1934 Phantom II commissioned by the Maharaja of Rajkot as All Weather Tourer by Trupp&Maberly. The orange RR with the polished hood features the family emblem on the doors and even in the windows. The car was part of a prominent Rolls Royce collection in Germany until it was re-acquired by the Maharaja family at the RM Auctions sale in Monaco in 2010. Unfortunately the car burned down about ten years ago but it was restored just in time for the golden jubilee parade of the Queen in 2002.

But not just Rolls-Royce found their way to the Indian sovereigns as they were keen in the elegant French design and the German mechanic as well. The second Maharaja class featured a 1930 Mercedes-Benz 710 SS with factory four seater bodywork, a Delage D8 Figoni Cabriolet, a very elegant Bentley Speed Six H.J.Mulliner Saloon with illuminated Lalique-Ornament and a duo of Hispano-Suiza. The automobiles with the stork on the radiator were some of the most expensive and exclusive cars of their era, the class featured a six-cylinder H6B Kellner Cabriolet and a later twelve-cylinder J12 de Villars Cabriolet that was also originally owned by the Rajkot dynasty.

But at the end the class was won by the spectacular Duesenberg Model J Gurney Nutting Speedster. The orange-black speedster with a disappearing dickey seat and streaming lines was a real show stopper and was also nominee for the Best of Show trophy.

Although just for display the two swan cars from the Louwman Collection were without doubt people´s favorites on the lawn. Designed back in 1910 as a swan with many special features and lavish details the Brooke 25/30HP was bought by the Maharaja of Nabha who built a smaller version, the Cygnet of 1919 that was also presented on the ramp at the beginning of the award ceremony. The larger version featured a steam spray out of the beak but more to the amusement of the audience it could also poop leaving the ramp a little bit slippery and one of the price-giving hostess on her back after a slip.

The second featured class was dedicated to the work of French Carrossier Saoutchik. The display spanned 3 decades showing the diversity of design ranging from a duo of Mercedes-Benz 680S from the late 1920s to the 1954 Pegaso Z-102 B. At the end of the roaring twenties the supercharged six-cylinder chassis designed by Ferdinand Porsche was the best one could buy, the S, SS and the shorter SSK models were successful in the hands of racers like Rudi Caracciola. Beside the in-house designed Sindelfingen bodies many chassis were bodied by carrossiers like Erdmann&Rossi and others but the most elegant design might be the Saoutchik Torpedo. With a long hood, small passenger compartment, a low sideline, the absence of a running board and full disappearing top the French variation looks much sportier than the works tourer bodies. Saoutchik built several examples both on the 680S and the 710SS and two of them were presented at Pebble, one with a higher and one with the low windshield. The gray version with the low windshield was once shown on the New York Auto show before it was acquired by Frederick Bedford Jr. of the Rockefeller Standard Oil Company whose family kept the car until 2006 when it was sold on auction at Christie´s Monterey sale. It was back on sale at the Bonhams Retromobile Sale in 2008 and on display (together with another Saoutchik 680S) at Lukas Hüni at the Techno Classica in 2009. It was then acquired by Paul & Judy Andrews who commissioned Paul Russell with the restoration to its former glory. After a previous restoration in the 1980s the car lost its original interior that was recreated and the car was brought back to the original color of Pigeon-Gray that was found under the cream yellow paint that covered the car for most of its life.

The attention to every detail and the painstaking research convinced the jury not just to the class win but also to get the crown of Best of Show. Almost 20 years after its last BoS restoration with the Trossi SSK Paul Russell scored another victory with a pre-war Mercedes-Benz showing his particular knowledge in these models.

Later in the 1930s the design changed very much and especially the rear fenders became part of the bodywork to make the cars look more aerodynamic and elegant. The Delage D8-120 S was a very good example of the taste of this time with a very elegant line without scrollwork. The silver hood and top of the doors underlined the floating lines that was assisted by the absence of door hinges as the doors slide open to the side. When the car appeared at the start of the Pebble Beach tour on Thursday morning not few had the opinion that this might be a contender for the Best of Show but at the end it had to give way to the Mercedes in its class. Later it was voted “Most Elegant Convertible”.

A rather wild design was the 1938 Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet “Xenia” Coupé from the Mullin Collection, inspired by the aviation this car features a long aerodynamic body with a narrow cockpit. This car featured André Dubonnet´s independent suspension and stayed a one-off show car.

After the war Saoutchik continued with flamboyant lines as one could see on the Cadillac 62 with its “smiling face” or a duo of Delahaye. One of the last creations of Saoutchik was a variation of the Pegaso Z102 but at this point other styling like the one of Touring on the same model were more interesting. Just a year later Saoutchik closed their doors just as many other coachbuilders of their era as well.

Another special feature this year was the class of AC and AC Cobra. In its golden jubilee the AC Cobra was present on all events during the classic car week but unlike the GTO last year the Cobra was more present on the race track than on the lawn. Although the Cobra had an own class including the first (and still unrestored) example still owned by Carroll Shelby when he passed away earlier this year, the Cobra was not that much in the focus at Pebble. It shows that these cars are still more present as a race car in vintage racing as not less than 44 took the chequered flag at the Monterey Motorsport Reunion the day before whereas the Ferrari GTO is more popular on the lawn today than in racing (due to its value).

Beside the special classes several marque-classes featured Duesenberg, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.

Ferrari had again two classes with the competition and road going models but was also very well represented in this year's preserved class. The tiny 500 Mondial was one of crowds favorite showing all the signs of age with proud rather than the perfection of some over-restored cars. The competition class included a open variation of the Mondial, two 250 TdF and the big 410 Sport amongst others. The Grand Touring class featured two lovely 212 Inter Cabriolet with early Pinin Farina design , a 250 GT LWB California Spider but the most impressive car was the 375 Plus PF Cabriolet. Once built for the Belgium King Leopold this car combines the chassis of a pure race car with the elegant cabriolet coachwork of Pinin Farina and for many Ferraristi this is the best looking Ferrari ever built. This combined with the history of a royal first owner and a restoration back to the original color scheme would be a good contender for a BoS but as Pebble is traditionally won by a pre-war car the Ferrari was not even nominated. But the late Sergio Pininfarina was specially honored with the black 212 Inter Cabriolet brought by Robert M. Lee, the first Ferrari ever to wear a body of Pinin Farinas design.

The Mercedes-Benz class was very strong this year as well. Although not featured the class span the range from the six-cylinder era of the 1920s to the iconic 300 SL in the 1950s. Oldest car in the class was a 1929 710 SS Barker Roadster but the 500/540K era was presented by no less than 4 dark blue/black variations including a Cabriolet A and B, a Special Cabriolet and a Special Roadster. But highlight was a duo of 1952 W194 celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. After the lost war and the restrictions Mercedes-Benz did a first approach back to motorsports with the 300 SL prototypes. With a limited budget and many parts from the limousine the race department created a light tubular frame with the famous Gullwing doors. The concours featured two examples, one with high and one with low doors, one of them is the actual 1952 Le Mans Winner (Chassis 7). At the end of the 1952 season a new car was developed for the next season and although it was never raced it became the prototype of the successful road version, today this one-off is part of the Mercedes-Benz museum collection.

Very important classes are always the pre-war European classes with several interesting cars every year. The sports racing class included 4 Alfa Romeo, 3 from the 6C 1750 series and an 8C 2300. Very special was the one-off of Italian collector Corrado Lopresto. Known for his preference of one-offs the Milanese brought a very unique 6C 1750 Grand Sport Aprile Spider that looked very modern compared to the standard spiders with their vertical radiators. But the class was won by the wonderful Figoni Coupé that already won all major awards at the Villa d´Este Concours earlier this year. The two-tone black&white streamlined 6C did not just win its class but was also awarded most elegant sports car and nominee for Best of Show.

Back in the 1930s French coachwork was present at the winners lists of every concours in the world and not few collectors have a special interest in the class of French Grand Touring. No less than three former Pebble Beach winner had a car in this class with last year's winner Peter Mullin coming home third in class with a Peugeot 302DS Darl´mat Pourtout Cabriolet. A little bit more extravagant was the second placed Delage D8 SS100 with two-tone Figoni Cabriolet Coachwork and a very nice Lalique ornament brought by Arturo Keller. Best in class went to the cream Talbot-Lago T150C Figoni&Falaschi Cabriolet from the Patterson Collection, again restored to perfection by RM Restorations just as the 2010 winning Delage. The car featured a mint green interior with matching Tiffany´s boxes and it looked elegant both with closed and open hood. Surprisingly it was not nominee for BoS but maybe just one car of the Class J was to be chosen and this was the Figoni Alfa.

The winners ceremony started at about 1:30 pm and with 28 separate classes it took about 3 hours to give away all the class and special awards. After a short break with the annual raffle hosted by Jay Leno it was finally time to announce the Elegance and BoS awards.

At the end 4 class winners were nominated for the Best of Show, the Figoni Alfa, the Duesenberg from the Maharaja class, a Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster from the Duesenberg class and the winning Mercedes. This year the pyrotechnics had a jump start as they blew up the confetti well before the Mercedes entered the ramp. After the smoke cleared away the Mercedes appeared in the middle of the ramp to receive it laurels, a well deserved winner of the biggest classic car show in the world.

The Concours was again a superb final of the classic car week in Monterey and although the week is an overdose of impressions everyone is looking forward to the next year with the 63rd Concours and new special features and cars never seen before.
We have now put together a gallery featuring all cars on the lawn sorted by class from the Concours and the Tour, more reports on the other events during the week will follow the next days.
