Chichester, 30 June - 03 July, 2011

Many events in the world like to use the nickname “little Goodwood” what is a good valuation of the original, the concept is often copied but never achieved. Over the years the Festival of Speed and the Revival became so famous that today´s events attract the best cars, drivers and support from most of the large manufacturer who send their treasures from past and present. Whereas the Revival in September is purely for classic cars the Festival of Speed is dedicated to all things that can go up the hill fast on two or four wheels giving the manufacturers enough room to present their sports and supercars. As the companies spend much money on the presentation of their latest products on the large infield the Festival was extended from 3 to 4 days in 2010 with the Thursday specially for the new cars as these became more and more popular over the years.

On the weekend the supercars are the first in the morning and in the afternoon to start the 6 runs up the hill all classes have to do during the 3 days. One run is about 1.16 miles long and the fastest cars reach the finish in just under 50 sec but just few of them take the time trial serious, most of them doing just a demonstration run to entertain the public. The cars are divided in 25 different classes with an individual theme, usually 5 classes share a run up the hill.

This year many classes were dedicated to single seaters as a main theme was the centenary of the Indy 500 in addition to the grand prix classes who are a permanent feature of the festival.

On the weekend before the American Independence Day the centenary was celebrated in style. On all three days the 5 classes of indy cars where lined up on the straight in front of Goodwood house accompanied by a marching band giving an impression of the supporting program of the original race. The national anthem was played by Jeff Kollman on his guitar on top of Goodwood house and the very modern interpretation took a smile on the face of many of the present drivers like Bobby Rahal, Bobby and Al Unser, Eddy Cheever, Dario Franchitti and Helio Castroneves to name a few. Altogether 14 winners of this legendary race were seen in some of their cars during the weekend but also in historic cars from the first years when the race was still driven on bricks. Josh Hill drove a replica of the Lola-Ford in which his grandfather Graham Hill won the race in 1966, the cars of the modern era entertained the crowds with some donuts on the narrow road.

The Grand Prix cars span 8 classes this year ranging from the huge cars driven in the early 20th century to their modern successors of the current championship. One of the oldest cars was the Fiat Mefistofele from 1907 that was rebuilt in 1923 to set a new land speed record at 146 mph. 78 years later the monster took the hill but an unsuitable gear ratio for the hill inhibited the storm despite the massive torque. Another legend was the Napier Railton, the Brookland record holder driven by American comedian, showmaster and petrol head Jay Leno on its first run.

The next class featured a nice quartet of racing Bugattis with a Type 35, a 16-cylinder 45, a 54 and the four wheel driven T53, but stars of this class were the silver arrows of Auto Union and Mercedes. Two years after the spectacular feature of no less than 14 of these legendary racers Audi brought a Type D and a Type C with contemporary twin-wheels at the rear. The D-Type was driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck, the son of Auto Unions works driver Hans Stuck, the C-Type was driven again by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. Mercedes brought the W165 that was purely build for the Tripolis Grand Prix that was limited to the 1.5 Litre voiturettes. The car won the race but the outbreak of the war prevented a further entry of the car as intended for the following season. The car was driven up the hill by John Surtees who is still the only one to win a drivers world championship both on two and four wheels. The class of voiturettes stayed after the war and the dominant car of this era, the Alfa Romeo 159 “Alfetta” was another star of the Festival, the also present BRM V16 unfortunately stayed quit during the weekend.

Further classes featured the eras of the cosworth engine with several Lotus, Brabham and McLaren plus the Ferrari of this time, the 312 B3 just to be followed by the turbo cars of the early 1980s. As this years Festival was again at a race-free F1 weekend several of the top teams have sent their last years cars and some of their drivers to Goodwood. This year the teams of Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Williams and Lotus had their 2010 cars on the hill as they are not allowed to run the current cars due to the ban of test drives. Years ago Nick Heidfeld set the record on the hill at less than 42 second when he showed up in 1999 with the McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 in full race trim, today the runs are more show with lot of burnouts in front of the grandstands. When the F1 cars are brought to the assembly area hundreds of fans are standing behind the fences to get a look on the stars and the cheer is getting even louder when the local heroes Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton arrive. The were joined by Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Bruno Senna and designer Adrian Newey so autograph hunters had plenty opportunities to fill their books. But also inside the assembly area it becomes more busy than in every other class as mechanics, assistants and media are numerous.

Things are cooling down a little bit when the next group of sports cars is coming up. These classes start with the pre-war cars such as the Mercedes-Benz 710 SS of Malcolm Campbell, the reconstructed BMW 328 MM Kamm Coupé and an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750, cars from the 50s such as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL W194 or the beautiful unrestored Ferrari 375 MM Pininfarina Spyder that was already shown at this years Villa d´Este. Sir Stirling Moss demonstrated his Porsche 718 RS61 after its restauration due to the crash at last years Monterey races. Porsche was presented by two 917, a 956 and a 961 in Rothmans livery, Alfa Romeo with three Tipo 33 in different body specification, but star of this group was the duo of Chaparrals. The 2E features the almost ridiculous high rear wing that is also known from the Lotus 49, the 2J has two fans drive by engines of snowmobiles to suck the car down to the street. Audi brought their latest Le Mans winning R18 TDI driven by Andre Lotterer who came home first overall with just over 13 seconds in front of a trio of Peugeots.

Jaguar celebrated 50 years of the legendary E-Type. Every year one manufacturer has the honour to put up a sculpture in front of Goodwood house as a landmark of the event. This year a huge E-Type build from tubes of steel was designed by Gerry Juddah who was also responsible for the previous installations. Jaguar had its own class on the hill with C-Type, D-Type, modern racers of the “Silkcut”-era and not less than 3 lightweight E- Types.

Jaguar also leads to the next element of the Festival, the Concours d´Elegance Cartier Style et Luxe where one of the seven classes was dedicated purely to the E-Type with another lightweight car on display. But stars of the concours were other cars, especially the black Ferrari 340 America with Berlinetta Body by Touring that was entered by David Cottingham of DK Engineering and that took Best of Show. Other highlights were the preserved 2/3-seater boattail Bentley 4 ½ litre Blower of 1931 called “The Green Hornet” and the Villa d´Este winning Alfa Romeo T33 Stradale. Other classes were dedicated to streamlining with cars like the Mercedes-Benz 170 V with body by Kamm or the Tatra T77 or a class for compact cars of the 1950s.

As mentioned above not just cars are running up the hill but also bikes. This year featured 4 classes of bikes including a special class for the Isle of Man TT that celebrated its centenary this year as well. Several winners and their bikes were on show and especially the modern superbikes rarely had both wheels on the ground. Beside the bikes the Rallye Cars are another part of the Festival. They have their own playground on top of the hill and all those who climb to the top (or just use the shuttle) are rewarded with a spectacle when the World Rallye Cars or the Group B cars such as the Audi Quattro Sport or Lancia Delta HF are blasting through the forest. Some of them are taking the hill as well but they usually avoid to stay on the tar and prefer a full drift on the grass, especially American Ken Block who is famous for his spectacular driving skills.

So after 4 days at the hill one has barely seen all the attractions but more than 180.000 visitors left the Festival more than satisfied. Most of them will be back in September for the Revival and it would be a surprise if the sign along the road will not say “sold out” again. All those more interested in modern stuff, bikes or rallye cars have to wait 52 weeks for the next Festival of Speed and it will be interested to see what will be featured next year as after every FoS one asks himself what might still come after all those years but the Earl of March and his team always finds something new to enjoy. As 2012 sees 50 years of the Ferrari 250 GTO it would be a surprise if this will not be honoured in Goodwood as well.
