Schloss Dyck, 31.07-01.08.2010

With their fifth edition the Classic Days at Schloß Dyck established themselves as Germans premium event. They are often compared with the very popular Goodwood events and although there are still differences especially in size there are indeed some similarities. The Classic Days combine the charm of the Revival with demonstration runs as they could be seen on the Festival of Speed. Furthermore both share the same symbol, an alley with chequered flags around the trees, once black (Goodwood) or red at Schloß Dyck.

The Classic Days are basically divided in three major parts, the concours (“Jewels in the Park”), the demonstration laps (“Racing Legends”) on a closed off course and the extensive supporting programme. The last consists of a pick nick area, a historic camping place and a huge visitors parking place for classic cars to name a few. The parking place had to be closed on both days due to overcrowding showing that the visitors actively take part bringing their own car.

The concours is held in the orangery of the castle and included several high profile cars in different classes as specified by the FIVA. A stunning Maserati A6 G2000 with beautiful two-tone Allemano body, a very rare Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia and several Delahayes where presented in the marvellous garden with the moated castle as a background. The castle itself was covered in a scaffold with a huge wallpaper of the initial state to show the work in progress restoration as all the gains of the event are used by the organising club to proceed the rebuild.
Best of Show became a Duesenberg Model X with Boat tail body entered from America showing the reputation of the event even outside Germany.

The Racing Legends were divided in several classes sorted by age of the cars and were presented on a triangle course near the castle. Of particular interest was once more the meeting of several of the white supercharged Mercedes-Benz and many Bentleys brought over by the Benjafield Racing Club to relive the old rivalry between the so called “white elephants” and the big green trucks ( so named by Ettore Bugatti ). On Saturday they had even the opportunity to challenge in the quarter-mile.
In other classes the cars span the era from the oldest car on the track, an De Dion Bouton from 1908 to cars of the 1950s and 60s including several Jaguars, Porsches and Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.

Highlights are the many demonstration runs by the attendant manufacturers indicating the significance of the event as few others can count on the factory support of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Opel and Toyota at the same time.
Mercedes-Benz showed once more their supercars of the last 100 year including a Simplex driven by Jochen Mass, a 720 SSK driven by the head of the museum Michael Bock, the famous 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé with Hans Herrman behind the wheel, the C111 and a CLK-GTR to promote the latest SLS.
Porsche brought over a 936 C and a 908/3 for the track and a 917 on static display, the later two coloured in the famous Gulf tone.
Audi brought their own Auto Union D-Type that was joined be the A-Type Replica entered by the Belgium D´Iteren group.
Alfa Romeo celebrated their centenary with a 159 Alfetta, the Tipo 33 Stadale Prototipo, a Tipo B and a 6C 3000 CM. The later twos were demonstrated by assorted members of the press over the weekend.
Opel demonstrated their recreation of the RAK2 that achieved 238 km/h in 1928 powered by 24 rockets. The recreation today runs an ordinary engine to demonstrate it in tracks like this.
Toyota celebrated 40 years of the Celica and the European meeting of the 2000 GT that featured 7 of the remaining 31 examples in Europe. Six of them were painted in the usual red but one was white as driven by James Bond in the movie “You only live twice”.
Another James Bond car was displayed by RM Auctions to preview their forthcoming auction “Automobiles of London”. The Aston Martin DB5 originally driven by Sean Connery in the movie “Goldfinger” features all the gadgets as machine gun behind the bumpers, armoured back plate, rotating number pate and what else James Bond needed.

With almost 40000 Visitors on the two days the Classic Days were once more a great success and one should mark the first weekend of August 2011 for the next edition. We are looking forward to report about this.
