Scotts Valley, 14th of August, 2017

After visiting the Laguna Seca Pre-Reunion the weekend the Monterey Classic Car Week finally is here with a slow start as Monday still is the only day nobody set up a show. So the first visitors and cars arrived in Monterey to set up their base in the various hotels or rented houses and cars are stored and prepared for the week to come. This is the day to visit the open house at Canepa Motorsports a few miles north.

Canepa is well known in the racing scene having raced almost everything in his career starting with sports cars in Daytona and the IMSA to dirt track and the famous Pikes Peak hill climb. Canepa was raised in a car crazy family and soon made his passion a business starting his own dealership, restoration shop and race preparing. Canepa was just seen the day before racing his Porsche 934.5 at the pre-historics, today the car was already on the lift for a check after the races. Canepa has a strong relation to all things Porsche as he was the driving force to make the famous Porsche 959 road legal in the US and especially in California where the restrictions are the most challenging.

Just upstairs his workshop Canepa Motorsports houses a small but very superb museum for race cars. Porsches are playing the main role for sure and apart from half a dozen of Porsche 959 of clients in the service and sales room Canepas speciality is the immortal 917 in every form. Bruce Canepa shown his own 917 a few years back at the Concours on the Avenue in Carmel and the car sits next to his 917/10 in the museum alongside an RSR, another 934.5, a 935 K4 and a 962.

But not only Porsche can be seen as small racers include a Healey Sprite as well as a very hot Fiat Abarth, several short track racers and the only Audi R15 in private hands. Centre piece of the display is also a Tyrrell P34, the famous six-wheeler F1 car. On loan is furthermore the Mercedes-Benz W196 of the Indianapolis Museum.

But not only can one visit the museum during these days but the open house also provides access to the workshop where Canepa has even rarer race cars. The ex. Follmer 917/10 CanAm Champion is currently under restoration giving a rare sight on the fragile tubular frame of a 917. Furthermore two 917/30 can be seen in the workshop making this a must visit for every Porsche fan. For those interested in seeing the cars in person the open house is still going on for the entire week making this a fun trip up the coast when the sun is hiding at the Monterey Peninsula.

Tomorrow will be the first full day of the Car Week starting with the Concours on the Avenue in Carmel. We plan to cover several events over the week and keep you updated about the activities on the Monterey Peninsula on a daily basis.
