Today we take a look back to our visit of one of the most famous race car collections in the world, the Simeone Foundation Museum in Philadelphia. When arriving from the airport the journey leads to the nearby business park that is home of the rental car parking lots and numerous car dealerships, unimpressive signposts guiding to a brown industrial building. Just a blue sign and the name over the entrance indicate that this building might be more than an ordinary factory building, a banner “Museum of the Year” is making curious. This award was given to the Museum in 2011 by a well known international jury of automotive experts in London in this category as part of “The International Historic Motoring Awards”.

The actual entranceway being in the shape of the upper section of the shield, complete with Italian Tricolore, upon which the “Cavallino Rampante” is normally mounted.

An overcast chilly start, with blustery winds, didn’t deter a great selection of Italian cars and motorcycles, along with thousands of visitors, from attending the annual Auto Italia magazine Italian Car Day, in the grounds of the Brooklands Museum near Weybridge in Surrey. With the third of five days driving though the French countryside the Tour Auto is already more than halfway through. Early at 7:00 am the competition classes sorted by age left the parc fermé in Vichy for a 459 km tour south to Albi, the capitol of the département Tarn in the Midi-Pyrenees. Unlike the previous two days the landscape became more and more interesting during the day with small hillside roads running through the forest, smaller mountain passes and passing through narrow villages.

When looking at the race calendar in the 21st century most of the activities are located at modern racetracks with state of the art safety facilities, be it sports car or formula races. Back in the last century during the dawn of motorsports a diversity of events were held on public roads, closed off hills or even airports, some of the most famous races were the Mille Miglia or the Targa Florio. One of the first important race series aside the European Grand Prix Championship was the European Hill Climb Championship started in 1930. Just as the Grand Prix Championship a few years later this included a variety of the most important events of its kind ranging from small events like the Shelsley Walsh to the large passes in the Alpes including the Klausenpass in Switzerland.

There were 28 entries for the ELMS race, in four classes, ten in the premier LMP2 class, three in the LMPC class, eight in the LMGTE class, and seven in the GTC class. As has been the case in most of Europe so far this year, the weather was changeable, with rain early on Friday dampening the first practice sessions, but thereafter it was largely dry for the main race activity of the weekend.

Over the last few year with the booming of classic cars a lot of new events came along to fill the classic car calendar and in the summer months spectators sometimes has the agony of choice where to go, be it racing, rallying or to shows. But among all these events there are still some that shine out and that are a must visit at least once in a lifetime, all of them looking back on a long history and grown over the years to their current status.
