Brescia, 17.-20. May, 2012

May 17th until May 20th saw this years edition of the Mille Miglia, presumably the most famous classic car event in the world. Already in its 30th edition since the start of the regularity rallye back in 1977 it was easy to see how things changed in the last 35 years. What started as an ambitious project of enthusiasts became a big commercial event over the years that attracts more visitors than any other event of its kind in the world. Especially in Germany the Mille Miglia was hyped over the years and with a holiday on Thursday it seemed that every owner of a classic car or modern cabriolet headed to Brescia to celebrate this year's parade at the start in Brescia.

With the takeover of the current organisation the scrutineering was relocated to the fairground of Brescia on Wednesday as it became too busy in the city center of Brescia the years before. But the cars can still be admired in Brescia on the day of the start as all cars drive over the Piazza Loggia to be sealed and parked in the city to give a great spectacle to all the visitors. With sunny weather the city centre was already crowded in the early morning hours when the first cars arrived and over the day the city seemed to burst at the seams as the cars had to make their way through thousands of people waiting at the exit of the parc fermé.

With so many visitors being all car affected in one or the other way the car industry recognized the value of a presence in the city center and many brands became sponsor over the years with more or less big displays of their latest models. The Volkswagen group occupied again a good portion of the nearby Piazza Paolo VI in front of the cathedral, a place that was once a great spot to look at the cars but for some visitors a new Veyron or Lamborghini seems to be more interesting. But this is not the only place where one can see the difference in sponsorship at the Mille Miglia as one just have to look at the big banner at the start ramp at the Viale Venezia: the logo of the MM (the red arrow) became smaller over the years and the slogan of the event („la corsa oiu bella del mondo“) disappeared to make way to all the sponsor logos. Certainly an event like this is difficult to organize without financial support but some get the impression that things are going over the top, in the last year hundreds of sponsor cars with special stickers followed the cars on their journey making it difficult to spot the participants between all the modern cars, a problem that was recognized by the organization as they tried to separate the cars more from the normal traffic this year with closed off special stages. This might be a good idea for all the participants but as this also affects the media and the assistance cars it became more difficult to report on the Mille Miglia the way it deserves as the accessible roads seemed to be even more frequented. But the „fare dodgers" might be a problem of the popularity of the event that cannot be solved as one cannot turn back the time, but certainly this is one point that might prevent some owners of the high valued cars to enter them at the Mille Miglia and take the risks on the jammed roads racing with modern sports cars. This is especially an issue for the pre-war cars as some owners complained about the Ferrari Tribute. Although the tribute runs in front of the historic cars some of the 140 Ferraris dropped back to run between the small Bugattis, Amilcars or Aston Martin, it will be interesting to see how next year's organization (as the contract with the current ends this year) will challenge this problem.

But one should not only live in the past and so it is important to look at the current edition compared to other contemporary events and then one can see that it is still a very attractive one. Few other rallies can match with the quality and diversity of the 1000 miles through Italy in some spectacular landscape and car fanatic locals. With the original MM running from 1927-1957 the eligible cars range from the OM (winner of the first edition), 6 and 8 cylinder Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Bugatti, BMW, Bentley and Mercedes on the pre-war side to the 1950s Maserati and Ferrari. This year was especially strong on the pre-war side with no less than 3 of the original Blower Bentley, 4 Mercedes-Benz 720 SSK and 4 Alfa Romeo 8C beside numerous racing Bugattis. But not just the big names are present but also many small specials, the so-called etceterinis mostly based on cheaper Fiat running gears like Bandini, Siata or Ermini, one of our favourites was the Gilco Fiat 1100 Sport from 1950 that looked very much like a smaller version of the Ferrari Touring Barchettas who were unfortunately not presented this year. Some of this small cars do not look very comfortable and doing 1000 miles during the following days must be a challenge when standing on the ramp at Viale Venezia on Thusday evening.

The first car to leave the ramp this year was the 1952 Jaguar C-Type that was reunited with Sir Stirling Moss and his co-driver Norman Dewis to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its original entry. In the next 2 hours about 370 cars left Brescia for the first leg to Ferrara that was once again the arrival of this year's MM after a few years of absence. Unusual for the Mille Miglia all cars could drive the first day in the dry as a rain shower during the start is almost tradition. A good reason to visit the start is for example the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR that was once again driven by Jochen Mass joined by Mick Walsh, the editor of „Classic & Sports Cars“. The SLR might be the best sounding car with its straight eight engine with desmodronic driven valves and the small side pipes and Mass surely knows how to drive it accelerating down the straight. Wherever the car is coming by the following 3 days one could hear it miles in front with its characteristic roar especially in the mountains.

The next day started early in the morning from Ferrara towards the first highlight of the day, the historic city centre of San Marino. This year just the competition cars were allowed to enter so there was not a major traffic jam as in previous years and the car could be admired by the crowds on by one coming up the narrow road with the hairpin to the transit control in front of the town hall.

After San Marino this year's route went south-west to Sansepolcro with one of the already mention special stages for the lunch stop. After another special stage the cars went on the freeway to Spoleto and down the Via Flaminia. Unfortunately the annual drive over the Monte Terminillo was not on the list that day as this was one of the highlight in previous years. Maybe the organizers were afraid of the uncertain snow conditions on the hilltop as this varies from almost none (as in 2011) to several meters (as in 2010). The day ended traditionally in Rome.
Whereas the Friday leg is always changing most of the Saturday leg is fixed with the drive up toward Viterbo and Radicofani in the morning. Unfortunately the drive through the town centre of Radicofani had to be cancelled due to a leaking gas pipe and road work on the Via Roma. This was also a major attraction for the visitors to see the cars coming up the small road and people sitting on the stairs of the church to see them in close-up.
The last special stage of the day was a very special one indeed. Just before Buonconvento the cars took a small section on an unpaved road giving a small impression what racing was all about in the pre-war years. The next section might be the best known of the Mille Miglia: after driving to the Siena and Florence the road goes up to the mountains to the famous Passe della Futa and later the Radicosa. The Futa Pass is one of the main crowd puller of the entire MM and the drive up there is very much a carnival, the visitors arrive early in the morning or even the day before with their camper to secure the best spots in the serpentines and the crowd is sitting on the nature tribune just under the pass plate to encourage the passing cars. This is also the most dangerous part of the Mille Miglia as the accompanying cars and the numerous motor bikes are encouraged as well with the spectators and some of them drive well above their limits. But this year the inevitable annual rain shower started exactly when the first cars came up the pass so at least less motor bikes could be seen that day. After the short shower the sun was out again to give the warm afternoon light on the way to Bologna, Modena and back to the arrival in Brescia.

About 10:30 pm the first cars arrived at the Viale Venezia they were welcomed by the many visitors who found their way to the finish despite the Football Champions League final in Television showing that Italian are even more fanatic about cars than in Football. The finish took almost three hours with the last car, the Birkin-Team Blower Bentley from the factory arriving at about 1:30 am showing that the good weather kept many cars in the race with just a few breakdowns. Due to a time keeper at the last special stage still 320 of the 370 cars started were in the race, a very good value on 1000 miles.

This year's edition was won by the Argentinian team Scalise/Claramunt on their Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 GS defeating the most successful entrants, mister MM Giuliano Cané on the BMW 328 MM Roadster.

Now it is time for a new organization as the contract with the current one expired and one can be curious what the next edition will look like, what they will take over from the present one and what will be new.

For now we have put together a preview of the galleries that will follow the next days after the Villa d´Este Concours that will be next weekend.
