Gröbming, 11th - 14th of July

20 years ago, in the fall of 1992 Michael Glöckner (then Tourism Chef of Gröbming) and F1 presenter Helmut Zwickl came up with the idea of a classic car rally in Austria. Thanks to the connections of Zwickl in the race and rally scene they managed to get Walter Röhrl as figurehead for the first edition held with 35 entrants in 1993 and the sportsman Röhrl is he also won the regularity event giving the new rally also a good start in the international media.

Over the next years the Ennstal-Classic grew year by year attracting many former race drivers early on with Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees and Hans Herrmann to drive to “the last paradise” and the major manufacturers sending their treasures from the factory museums. With the “GP of Gröbming” the event was enriched by a show event in the town centre of Gröbming where the spectators could admire race cars of all eras including the famous Silver Arrows of Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz driven by legends like Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Tom Kristensen or Sebastian Vettel in recent years, others like Jochen Mass and Rauno Aaltonen are regular guests in the regularity rally so there is always much to see.

Now at the second weekend of July the Ennstal-Classic was celebrating its 20th edition and many of the early supporters were back in actions with Sir Stirling Moss again teamed up with his former co-pilot Norman Dewis in the 1952 Jaguar C-Type, Hans Herrmann in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, Walter Röhrl in a Porsche 718 and Nigel Mansell was back again after 2011 in a Porsche 936. Regular entrant Dieter Quester was presenting a Toyota Camry Nascar that looked way too big for the small roads in Gröbming and Goodwood mastermind, the Earl of March (whose Festival of Speed was also born in 1993) demonstrated a Gulf-Porsche 908/3 in one of the few dry moments of this year's Ennstal-Classic as the weather unfortunately was not willing to support the celebration.

With the record number of 230 entrants the scrutineering was prolonged to two day a few years ago and this year moved from the usual spot in a local car shop around the corner to a provisional tent on a parking lot of the nearby supermarket. Several entrants used the first day of the scrutineering on Tuesday to practice some of the special stages on Wednesday showing again that the regularity is taken very serious here, the absence of digital helpers is an additional challenge for the experienced driver/navigator teams.

Wednesday afternoon showed the first heavy showers and some of the drivers with open cars became aware that they might get very wet this year as the weather forecast for the following days was even worse.

Thursday morning the cars were lined up in Gröbming for the start to the nearby Stoderzinken early in the morning. Every 30 seconds a car took the first stage up the hill and again most of the entrants had to stop in the upper serpentines to wait for the right moment to drive through the light barrier at the finish to avoid penalty points at an early stage of the rally. With many drivers going for the hundredths of a second a single mistake during the three days would end all chances for a good ranking. The finish on top of the hill is also the start for the second part of the rally, the so-called Orange-Prolog, a loop of about 400 km. Usually this includes some of the best parts of the rally with the drive though the Sölk-Tal and up the Sölk-Pass but unfortunately the scenery was lying in clouds this afternoon but at least it stayed try for most of the day. The first destination was again the Red Bull Ring, the Austrian race track formerly known as Spielberg where the drivers had to do some regularity laps before approaching the highlight of the tour, the annual drive over the Nockalm. The competitors seemed to be in a hurry that day as most of the visitors taking the way up to the top of the pass were surprised by the first cars to arrive well before the schedule. The Nockalm street is a closed-off conservation area were the cars can be enjoyed without traffic on 52 serpentines and 35 km through a splendid scenery that unfortunately lay in clouds most of the afternoon as well preventing the usual distant view on the hill tops and when the last cars arrived the second hill the expected rain started accompanying the cars on their way back to Schladming for the finish of the first day.

The weather did not change overnight so the next morning started grey in grey but this day the rain started earlier on the first miles over the Postalm and should not end until the later afternoon so the entrants had to drive well over 8 hours in the rain that day. Those with closed cars had to fight with fogged windows, those with a soft top found out where theirs are leaking and those without any weather protection in rain overalls and helmets had not just to challenge the time trials but also to keep the roadbook in a dry and readable condition. Unfortunately the weather also meant that the usual enthusiasm of the locals was rarely seen, just a few supporters had set up their ale-benches in tents or covered wagons to encourage the classics on their way through the rain to the lunch stop on the town square of Steyr. After a short stop and a refreshment including a hot cup of coffee the second part of the day led south again and all of the sudden the sun came out when the convoy drove over the Hengstpass before the next control point at the Spital am Pyhrn. Within a few minutes all the clouds disappeared and the cars drove under a blue sky for the last 3 hours of the day, all the hoods came down and the drivers enjoyed the warm sunbeams compensating for the last hours in the rain. With the improvement of the weather also the spectators came out giving an impression of the enthusiasm of the locals for their Ennstal-Classic. The last cars arrived at 8 pm at Schladming to start with the evening reception , the “Ferrari Night” and some of the participants arrived late at night at their hotels where the impressions and their positions in the ranking were discussed with a glass of beer or wine.

Saturday is the highlight for the spectators as all the action is concentrated in the city centre of Gröbming. In various tents and street cafe people can spend the morning before the start of the mentioned Chopard GP with the race cars doing some demonstration laps. Another attraction in the supporting programme was stunt driver Chris Pfeiffer on his BMW giving a spectacular show driving most of the time on one rather than two wheels.

After the GP and a few demonstration laps of the Ferrari Club the entrants had to do their last regularity trial fighting for the overall victory. Whereas the first cars came home dry after the final 1.4 km with various light barriers the higher numbers had to fight with the elements as torrential rain reduced the visibility on the barriers and parts of the road were flooded but with top results of car numbers near 200 they proved that this did not impair the final result.

After 3 days of driving on nearly 900 km the winning team of Helmut Schramke/Peter Umfahrer won by just 5 point difference (that means 5/100th of a second) against Dr.Karsten and Monika Wohlenberg who led until the final stage. Schramke and Umfahrer won for the third time after 2003 and 2006, Wohlenbergs back in 2009 showing that again some of the favourites were on top of the podium.

Next year's they will fight again for the hundredths of a second whereas the less ambitious entrants will just come back to drive in the last paradise and enjoy the Austrian scenery, hopefully with better weather on the 20th anniversary of the Ennstal-Classic.
