Quail Lodge, 15th - 17th of August

Beside many static events during the Monterey classic week there are a few driving events as well. One of these is the Quail Rally, first initiated in 1997 by Sir Michael Kadoorie (proprietor of the Quail Lodge Resort and host of the following Motorsport Gathering) for some of his friends. As most of the serious collectors are present during the week this is a good opportunity to come together and to enjoy some of the cars displayed during the following days at the various events. This year about 3 dozen of Sir Kadoories friends came together to drive down the coast and through the surrounding mountains of the back country, start and finish is the Quail Lodge resort on the first days to end at the McCall Jet Center Party on Wednesday. As most of the other events the entrance fee is given to charity making it a drive for a good cause.

We met the group on Tuesday morning at the resort were the misty day was started with a good open-air breakfast. Among the cars entered there were a few modern sports cars but mainly classics from the 1930s to the 60s. The pre-war cars were presented by a beautiful Bugatti T57 Cabriolet by Gangloff, a Hispano Suiza VanVooren Cabriolet and a Riley Imp. No less than 4 Mercedes 300 SL both as Roadster and Gullwing were present plus a few Porsche 356 cabriolets.
6 classic Ferraris were entered, the oldest of them was driven by Kadoorie himself, the 166 MM touring barchetta (0044M), furthermore two Superamericas, both a 410 (0479SA) and a 400 Aerodinamico (4251SA) that could be seen the following Friday at the Superamerica-display at the Motorsport Gathering . Brian Redman drove a 250 GT Lusso Competizione that was once entered at the Tour de France and today proudly wears a Tricolore. Star of the rally was the 250 GTO (3505GT), one of 21 GTOs to be seen during this week at Pebble Beach and the races at Laguna Seca. The pale green example was restored back to the original looking interior recently and is in great overall condition. Some of the other GTOs to be seen the following days were restored to a perfect finish with lots of filler but this one shows the imperfection of the light aluminium body of race cars from this era.

After the breakfast the rally did a loop through the resort were the diving shots were made before the cars left to the unknown as the route is not open to the public to keep the rally as private as possible.
