Salzburg, June 2-5, 2010

The Gaisberg near Salzburg can look back on a long history of hill climbs. After the first edition in 1929 and a few more before the war this hill climb became even part of the European Hillclimp Championship in the 1960s. In 1968 the famous Porsche 909 Bergspyder in the hands of Gerhard Mitter set the record time of 3:41:54 minutes for the 8.6 km up the hill but several fatal accidents during the years led to the final edition in 1969 when the cars and bikes roared up for the last time.

2003 saw the first revival as an event for historic cars, organized by the Salzburg Rallye Club. As with most of the other events of this kind todays edition is a regularity event extended over several days with not just the hill climbs but a timed round through the “Salzkammergut” and a City GP in Salzburg.
This years edition started on Wednesday the 2nd of June when 169 classic cars mostly from Austria, Germany and Switzerland met at the paddocks in Guggenthal. Among them were a Porsche 908 Spyder, two 904 GTS, a RSK and a 550 Spyder plus a Porsche-Abarth 356 GTL, the later two from the factory museum. Furthermore a bunch of 356 and 911 took up the challenge. Ferrari was presented by three 275s (one GTS and two GTB), a 330 GTC and 330 GT 2+2, a 250 SWB s/n 3035GT, the ex-de Portago 250 GT PF Berlinetta s/n 0415GT, a 212 Export s/n 0102E and a 250 S1 Cabriolet that was rebodied in period as California Spyder s/n 0829GT.

On the pre-war side the field featured cars from a tiny MG to Bentleys and a Bugatti T50 with almost 5 litre displacement. Oldest car on the hill was a Alfa Romeo RL TF from 1924.
The scrutineering and drivers briefing was held at Schloß Hellbrunn in pouring rain on Thursday before the cars were escorted by the police to the city centre of Salzburg were they were displayed at the Residenzplatz. As the weather improved during the day the Residenzplatz was well visited as was the course of the City GP. On a drying road the cars had to drive 5 rounds on a small rectangle course connecting two bridges over the Salzach in a given time. Being already part of the regularity trial the drivers and co-pilots had to be very concentrated on the different parts of the course and the full lap but for the thousands of spectators it was just pure fun. Although parts of the city are blocked during the event one could see that it is very well accepted by the locals and gave the visitors of Salzburg an unexpected bonus to the usual tour through the historic town.

On Friday the field was divided in two parts with the first starting at the hill in the morning and the second doing the tour through the Salzkammergut. After the lunch break the two groups changed so every group had two timed runs up the hill plus the tour.

With a given time of 10 minutes one could clearly see who was taking this regularity thing serious and who was just there to enjoy a cordoned road up the hill. The first group showed very competitive with several attempts within a tenth of a second on every run, many cars parked on the Zistelalm ¾ up the hill to do the last kilometres just in the given time. Others had their fun in chasing the records of the past with a Chevron B16 doing the fastest time of the day with a sporty 4:19:56 min. As the car was very fast all the way up the record of 1968 becomes even more impressive with an additional 40 sec faster!

The Saturday started in the morning with several rounds on the Salzburgring. After 2 untimed laps to learn the track the third set the pace for the following 3 laps.
The lunch break was at the Hotel Schloß Fuschl at the Fuschlsee. This very elegant hotel is a great location to park all the cars in front of and with just the hotel guests and the participants around there were plenty of opportunities to take pictures of the cars as long as the crews enjoyed  their lunch. After lunch they started for the last trial of the event, once more a climb on the Gaisberg.
In the evening the price giving was at the famous Hangar 7 of the flying bulls with Peter and Christian Krieglsteiner in a Mercedes-Benz 280 SE winning overall.
