Chichester, 9th - 10th of April, 2022

The Goodwood Members’ Meeting returned to its regular April date after last year’s postponement to October due to the pandemic situation. The whole weekend was bathed in virtually constant spring sunshine, although a breeze kept overall ambient temperatures down, but it was still pleasantly warm. The spring-like atmosphere was enhanced by “A host, of golden daffodils; … fluttering and dancing in the breeze” (to plagiarise part of the poem by William Wordsworth), which lined various parts of the track, and were also predominant as part of the hospitality areas decor.

There was further yellow hue in the Ukrainian pale blue and yellow flags that were flown along the pit lane and other parts of the event, in place of the regular British Union flags, as a sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, following the Russian invasion. There was also an “Artists for Ukraine” stand, with Nick Mason’s Ferrari 365 GTB4/C, chassis 15373, finished in yellow with its pale blue side stripe, as a focal point alongside it.

There was a fourteen race programme, two of which were for motorcycles, together with V8 and V10 era F1 cars and Porsche 956/962 models demonstration runs, with further examples of both F1 cars and Porsche 956/962 models in static displays in the paddock. There were a total of sixteen Porsche 956/962 models present, including three Le Mans winning examples. One of the F1 cars on track was a McLaren MP4/5 driven by Bruno Senna, whilst others included a pair of Benettons, an Arrows, a Brabham, a Coloni and a Jordan. On static display in the paddock there were examples of McLaren and Williams, together with a pair of Ferraris, a F310, chassis 171, and an F310B, chassis 179. There was also the presentation of Gordon Murray’s latest creation the T.33, which was on display together with a T.50 and T.50S Lauda, whilst a further example of the T.50 acted as the pace car for the F1 demonstration runs. Another feature was the increasingly popular drift car demonstrations during the late afternoon on each day, providing clouds of acrid rubber smoke. The gathering also featured a Bonhams auction, where the top sale was an Aston Martin DB5 at £506,000. There were also two vendor areas with a variety of offerings and a classic and supercar display area adjacent to the auction marquee.

On track there was plenty of action from a wide variety of cars and motorcycles, spread across the busy race programme. There was a pre-war Frazer Nash only field in the A.F.P. Fane Trophy race, with Alfa Romeo 8C Monzas, Bugattis, Delahayes and Talbots in another pre-war models race, the Varzi Trophy. Saloon car aficionados were well catered for with three races. The first was for examples built through the fifties up to 1960, with an eclectic mix ranging from a diminutive Renault 4CV and 2-Stroke Saab 93B, through a VW Beetle, Lancia B20 GT and Peugeot 203, to wallowing leviathans like a Lincoln Cosmopolitan and a Cadillac Coupe. The other two were the Gerry Marshall Trophy and Sprint races, the latter bringing the event to a close on the Sunday evening. These featured an equally diverse array of predominantly seventies machinery, from Mini 1275 GTs, through Ford Capris and Escorts, Rover SD1s to thundering Chevrolet Camaros and Ford Mustang Boss 302s.

There was also a trio of sports car races, the Surtees Trophy for early Can-Am cars like McLaren and Lola-Chevrolets plus Le Mans cars like the Ford GT40, the Robert Brooks Trophy for small bore sports racing cars like the Lotus XI, and the Peter Collins Trophy for fifties sports racing cars, including Jaguar C & D-Types, a Ferrari 290 MM/250 TR and a 500 TRC, with a 1957 Ford Thunderbird “Battlebird” thrown in for good measure. Apart from the F1 demonstration runs, monoposto fans had the Derek Bell Cup race for Formula Junior cars. The start of the race programme on Sunday morning was the Weslake Cup for small bore GT cars, with field comprising mainly of Austin Healey Sprite variants. The main feature race was the Graham Hill Trophy for GT cars, featuring a plethora of AC Cobras, with some Jaguar E-Types, a pair each of Chevrolet Corvettes and Porsche 904 GTS’, one-off entries like a TVR Griffith, Aston Martin DP214, Bizzarinni 5300 GT, together with a pair of Ferraris, a 250 GTO/64 and a 250 LM, both beautifully presented albeit replicas. Thus there was a truly diverse selection of machinery to be enjoyed over the weekend, the enjoyment made even greater, thanks both to the fine weather, and also to the impressive organisation, that has become a Goodwood trademark.
