Gröbming, 13th - 16th of July 2011

Last weekend saw the 19th edition of the popular classic car rallye in Austria with the slogan “driving in the last paradise”. A paradise it is indeed although the weather did not show to much of it as you might read later. A new record number of more than 350 teams applied for the 225 starting places in the largest field of the Ennstal-Classic ever. So the organisation team had the agony of choice to select a list of 48 different makes ranging from 1924 to 1972.

BMW celebrated 75 years of the legendary 328 Roadster with no less than 9 examples of the successful 2 litre engined sports cars of the late 1930s. Last year the MM model celebrated 70 years of the Mille Miglia victory at the same place, this year just one of the Touring bodied cars was entered in the Chopard Grand Prix.
Dr.Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin led an armada of a dozen of the British sports cars, maybe the largest gathering in Gröbming ever, the cars ranged form a very rare DB3 to the DB6 driven by Dr.Bez himself.

Other highlights included two very rare Alfa Romeo, the RL Targa Floria of 1924 being the oldest car in the field, the 8C 2300 Zagato Spyder one of the most elegant, Ferrari was presented by a 250 Europa, a 250 GT Lusso and a Series 2 Cabriolet, 4 Litre cars both as coupé and cabriolet and no less than 4 Dinos.

As usual at these rallyes several Porsche 356 and 911 were entered as the air cooled engines are predestined for a drive in the mountains although the temperatures this year did not cause the problem of overheating. Dr.Wolfgang Porsche himself led the pack including a few museums cars in his 356 B Carrera.

Like every rallye the Ennstal-Classic starts with the scrutineering in the centre of Gröbimg on Tuesday and Wednesday were the coveted race numbers are handed over and the cars are checked. In a proper workshop with a pit the attention is more on the road safety than on many other rallyes but most of the cars were good prepared for the 1000 km to come. Wednesday was one of the hottest day of the summer but the sultriness was a good indicator for the change of the weather at the following days. Most of the crews taking the time trial serious used the dry weather to practice some of the special stages, the Stoderzinken was already well frequented as was the small road leading out of Gröbming.

Thursday morning traditionally starts with the hill climb on the nearby Stoderzinken that lay in the clouds at a temperature of just 11 degree celcius. Due to the slippery road the time up the hill was prolonged by a minute, as usual most of the teams had to wait at the last serpentine for the right time to go for the hundredth of a second. After a brunch on top at the Rosemialm the Orange Prolog with a total distance of 381 km started with the first special stage down the hill. This year the Prolog already led over the Sölkpass that was usually part of the large loop on Friday as the first stop this year was the Red Bull Ring, formerly known as the Österreich or A1-Ring in Spielberg. The teams had to do two identical laps there before being back on the road to head west for the Nockalm, an annual fix point of the tour. This year the idyllic road over the Nockberge was taken in the other direction than in previous years on the way back to Gröbming, where the first cars arrived at about 8 pm. Due to the clouds it was already dark when the last cars arrived but nevertheless they were expected by many visitors who stayed until the last car took the light barrier.

Friday is the day of the Marathon, this year a loop in form of an eight with more than 500 km, also in a different direction than in previous years. So this year the cars headed west in the morning and again most of the hoods were up due to rain when passing Aich and the Filzmoos to go up the small roads to the Postalm. Further passages included Bad Ischl and Bad Mitterndorf on the way to the Spital at Pyhrn and the lunch stop in Steyr. Whereas the roads in the morning were quite interesting again giving many photo opportunities to all the fans of the rallye the way back to the south is with some exceptions on larger roads making the navigation easier but lacks a little bit of charm so most of the spectators concentrated on the passage of the Kaiserau. As the cars arrived quite early in Rottenmann the street of the time control became a large parking lot were the entrants were presented to the spectators. The finish of the Marathon was again Schladming were the evening was spent in the Posthotel.
Saturday is not just the last special stage for the competitors in Gröbming but also the day of the Chopard Grand Prix, the demonstration of several significant sports and race cars and prominent drivers. In the last two days visitors of Gröbming had the opportunity to visit the race car exhibition were the cars are lined up in a tent and autograph signing hours are held with the present drivers. Once again Sir Stirling Moss was celebrated by the masses as he became very popular as a regular entrant of the previous editions. This year he passed the Marathon but drove up the hill on Thursday in a Porsche 911 and taking part at the Grand Prix in a Ferrari 750 Monza. He was joined again by Maria Teresa de Fillippis (in a Maserati 150S), Nanni Galli (in a Tecno-F1) and Jochen Mass (diving the Simplex from 1902) who are all regular attendees. Star this year was former F1 World and Indy Car Champion Nigel Mansell who was driving a Porsche 908/3 this day entertaining the crowd with lot of wheel spin on the roads of Gröbming. Two Porsche 911 GT1 and the latest VW Race-Tuareg were further highlights, the 1971 Le Mans winning Porsche 917K Lightweight was on static display as the car is not in driving condition.

After the spectacle of 5 laps of the race cars the last special stage was done in best conditions as the sun was out for the last day. After two days of driving almost 1000 km the first two teams were within 8/100 of a second making the lap in Gröbming a thriller. It is an open secret that some of the navigators are hired especially for the rallye so it is refreshing to see that the first 3 teams are all family teams. At the end the father-daughter team of Alois and Birgit Heidenbauer succeeded on their first Ennstal-Classic over Reinhard and Doris Huemer, both driving a Ferrari 246 GT Dino.

Despite the erratic weather the Ennstal-Classic was once again a big success. All the entrants had the impression that even more people were standing on the side of the road this year and the passages through the towns were very well visited. The increasing number of applies every year shows a bright future of the rallye and next year most of the competitors will be back again to go for the hundredths or just enjoy the panorama at a “drive through the last paradise”.
