Goodwood’s sixtieth anniversary

Three days of pure nostalgia with great racing and all under sunny skies, it could only be the Goodwood Revival Meeting in September. This year was the sixtieth anniversary of the first motor race at the Goodwood, which took place in September 1948, and it is now also ten years since the first Revival Meeting was held in 1998, so it was with good reason that it enjoyed a taste of good weather, which has been sadly missing in the UK this summer. The timing of the event was also opportune in providing people with a chance to escape from the real world, with its current economic doom and gloom.

No sign of the economic downturn – crowds larger then ever
There was certainly no sign of the economic downturn within the boundaries of the fabulous circuit in West Sussex, the crowds were as large as in previous years, maybe even larger, and the atmosphere with its period dress theme was as special as ever. With a sixteen race programme spanning over the Saturday and Sunday, parades, aerobatic displays, together with the practice sessions on Friday, the “Earls Court Motor Show”, the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation Concours, the Bonhams Auction, a wide variety of trade stalls and all the peripheral “theatre” activity, it was a packed weekend for the classic motoring enthusiast. Then no visit to the Revival Meeting is complete without a tour around the pre-1966 car park area, where one always discovers some rare gems.

Track parades
There were three separate track parades held on each day of the event. The first was to celebrate the year in which the circuit held its first race meeting, “Life on the Road in 1948”, with a variety of vehicles that one might have encountered on the roads at that time, including a Morris Minor which made its debut that year and went on to become one of the icons of British motoring for the masses. The second was called “Goodwood Legends”, which was a celebration of the cars and drivers that had raced and tested at Goodwood over the years, which included Sir Jackie Stewart in the BRM P261, the car in which he set the equal fastest lap of Goodwood with Jim Clark in a Lotus, a record that stands in perpetuity. The final one was a “Tribute to Tony Brooks” featuring a selection of the cars that he had raced during his career, in which he drove a Vanwall F1 car of the type in which he won three F1 races in 1958.

Impressing list of drivers, both “ancient and modern”
The list of drivers, both “ancient and modern” read like an international motor sport Who’s Who, apart from those mentioned elsewhere in the report there were Rauno Aaltonen, Derek Bell, Martin Brundle, Jean-Marc Gounon, David Hobbs, Jackie Oliver, Arturo Merzario, Sir Stirling Moss, Henri Pescarolo, David Piper, Emanuele Pirro, Bobby Rahal, Brian Redman and Marc Surer to name but a few. The big names entered for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy motorcycle race, was also impressive, with the likes of Wayne Gardner, Mick Grant, Niall McKenzie, Jeremy McWilliams, Steve Parrish and Phil Read in the entry list.

The racing was fast and furious, occasionally too much so, as either the machinery gave up the fight and wilted by the track, or the driving was over enthusiastic, resulting in a few “moments”. Ex-F1 driver Jochen Mass managed to flip the Lancia-Ferrari D50A re-creation exiting the chicane on Sunday morning, fortunately walking away with only minor injuries, and in the St Mary’s Trophy race for saloon cars on Saturday, John Fitzpatrick flipped the Austin A95, but the mechanics managed to get it straight enough for the second part of the race on Sunday, for it to take victory in the hands of John Young. In the Madgwick Cup on Saturday Carlos Monteverde put in an inspired drive in his Dino 206 SP to battle through from third on the grid to take his first win at the circuit in ten years of trying. In the Goodwood Trophy, the ERAs of Ludovic Lindsay and David Morris put on a spectacular display in their battle for victory, with the former eventually taking the winner’s laurels. In the Freddie March Memorial Trophy the pairing of Stuart Graham/Emanuele Pirro, took victory in an Austin Healey 100S, the Audi star seemed as though he had great fun by lapping the entire field twice, judging by the smile on his face afterwards.

Ferrari finally wins the Tourist Trophy
The highlight of the meeting is always the Tourist Trophy, a one hour race for GT cars built between 1960-64, in which the grid had an estimated value £85 million! Martin Brundle put the lightweight Jaguar “E” Type that he was sharing with Adrian Newey on pole position ahead of the Lister-Jaguar Coupé of Law/Reid and the Ferrari 330 LM berlinetta of Hardman/Verdon-Roe. The story of the race was a battle between these three, with the finishing order being the reverse of the grid starting positions, with the Ferrari beating the Lister-Jaguar to the chequered flag by a fraction over two seconds after an hour of racing. The final race of the meeting was the Whitsun Trophy for sports racing prototypes built between 1963 and 1966, where the Lola-Chevrolet of Simon Hadfield took one of the narrowest victories of the weekend, beating the McLaren-Chevrolet of Roger Wills to the flag by 0.757sec, with Ray Bellm’s Ford GT40 just over a second further back in 3rd position, a fittingly exciting end to a great weekend of historic racing.
