Ferrari at the Techno Classica
Visiting the Techno Classica this year, one could believe that Maranello must be situated in the far west of Germany in April. 45 Ferrari and Dino models could be counted. The oldest one, a 212 Export Touring Berlinetta recently appeared at the Bonhams Gstaad Ferrari auction in December but remained unsold. Currently Klaus Werner tries his luck to sell the little Touring Berlinetta, which was delivered new to gentleman racer Gerino Gerini. This car was exported to Australia in 1955, where it remained until 2000, when offered for sale for the first time by Duncan Hamilton.

Only 8 Ferrari 375 America Pinin Farina Coupes were produced originally. So the opportunity to look at one of these cars is really rare. But it gets even better: In hall 6, Red Willow Racing from the Netherlands offered an unrestored and therefore absolutely original example, once (or still) owned by well known Belgian collector Ennio Gianaroli. The 375 Americas were street cars par excellence and not built for racing. Nevertheless, chassis 0317AL can claim race history with a certain Jacques Swaters behind the wheel !

”Not for sale only for show”  was clearly written in front of a red and deep Drogo nose. The nose belonged to a 250 LM with chassis number 6217 and was shown by premium car dealer Lukas Hueni from Zurich.  But a common proverb says all: ”Not for sale but it can be bought” seems to be the right term to describe the current situation with this LM. And so rumours have it that $3.0million would buy 6217…

The newly founded vintage car dealer Movendi from Cologne presented its recently acquired 250 GT Boano alloy Coupe s/n 0547GT,  formerly owned by Giovanni Piero Rotundo from Italy. A second alloy Boano Coupe, s/n 0575GT offered by Mirbach,  looked a bit strange in its light yellow paint, but  has an all-German ownership chain. A good restoration project. The first owner a dentist from Hanau told the barchetta sponsor in the 70's that he raced the car in german hillclimbs and that the sunroof was an addition by Scaglietti.

Quality and not quantity seemed the perfect expression for the Maseratis exhibited this year. Lukas Hueni had not only ”a” 300 S on display, but simply the car which undoubtedly must be one of the most original 300 S in existence.  Sold new to Swiss Robert Jenni its race history has never been properly established. The only result known is the 2nd overall positon of Baron Toulo de Graffenried in the 1955 Lisboa GP with this particular Maserati. From Argentina and the States it eventually went to Germany in the 80’s and since then adorns one of the very best Maserati collections in the world.

Another highlight was the Klaus Werner display in hall 1.  Driving a 250 F with a Birdcage V12 engine inside must be a challenging drive ! Well, this is exactly what Klaus Werner had on offer – the T2 Lightweight V12 project 250 F chassis number 2531 ! It started life as a V12 works racer and was sold to Brazil without the V12 engine after a short and unsuccessful racing career. Later, someone had the nerve to mount a Chevrolet V8 into this true Italian thoroughbred and not until its restoration through Steve Griswold in the 80’s did it get a V12 re-installed.

In oppostion to the 250 F, Klaus Werner’s own 300 S s/n 3059 can certainly not be described as unsuccessful. In 1956, 3059 won the 1000km Nuerburgring race, Kristianstad and the Australian Tourist Trophy as a works race car before it was sold to Reg Hunt from Melbourne, Australia. Although exhibited, 3059 was not for sale. Again, rumours have it, that Werner is commissioned to sell another 300 S but the owner didn’t want to show his car at the Techno Classica.

The most tasteful club stand this year was presented by the German Maserati Club. Wonderful Maseratis on display combined with exceptional black & white pictures from the Walter Baeumer Nuerburgring Collection made this stand unique. Due to the great support of Hartmut Ibing the German Maserati Club was able and proud to show the most original 450 S in existence. By the way, its original engine stood next to the car.

Probably the bargain of the show was the black painted Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Spider with the original hardtop and automatic transmission. Offered by Berlinetta Motors in a very fair condition it sold for approx. € 70,000 to a happy German buyer. Bravissimo !

Like every year, the Techno Classica in Essen, the 14th issue, has to be seen as the best possible season opener for all classic car enthusiasts. It is recognized now as the world’s largest classic car show with more than 100.000 visitors, ca. 800 exhibitors in 15 halls, various club and book stands etc. etc..

This year, more than 2.000 cars from almost every car manufacturer in the world, coachbuilder and designer showed up, often for sale, sometimes only for display.

Starting with Alfa Romeo, my personal highlight of the show besides the mysterious 2600 Prototype designed by Pinin Farina was undoubtedly the wonderful black painted 6C-2500 SS Villa d’Este Coupe offered by Movendi. Delivered new to France and later owned by Maria Fernand it was presented in an amazingly original condition with just 20.000km on the clock ! No wonder that this car had won the ”Best of Show”- Techno Classica prize on Sunday.

Another very original car was offered by Christoph Grohe from Switzerland in hall 1. Only partly restored this ‘grigio’ painted 1900 SS Touring Coupé S.2 could be bought with just SFr. 25,000.

Two red Miura beasts, one S and SV, battled for the favour of the visitors. 4880 was crashed heavily once in its life but later restored by Salvatore Diomante (of Bizzarrini P538 fame).  Huberti Automobile displayed a white Jarama S in hall 6, almost always with the bonnet wide open. Interestingly, on the chassis number plate one could read ”10460” but on a second plate in the engine bay clearly visible stood ”10450 – Werner Bockelmann”. I’m wondering if Huberti have already realised this – let’s say – small difference…..
