Colorado Springs, 5 - 9 July, 2000

The Ferrari Club of America held their Year 2000 Annual Meet in Colorado Springs with the majestic Rocky Mountains as a backdrop to the proceedings. The venue for the gathering was the five star Broadmoor resort hotel to the west of the city, nestling at the foot of the majestic mountain range that contain the 14100 feet high Pikes Peak, famous for the annual 4th July hillclimb, known as "The Race To The Clouds".

Event registration commenced on Wednesday 5 July, but many participants arrived the day before to witness the hotel's spectacular Independence Day firework display across the lake, accompanied by a live orchestra on the terrace.

There were no specified activities on the registration day, so once participants had registered, they were free to avail themselves of the extensive hotel amenities, browse the club's silent auction display and mercado area, or simply go sightseeing, of which there were plenty of varied attractions close by.

Thursday was concours day held in the grounds of a country club on the Broadmoor estate, and as can be seen from the list of cars entered, attracted quite a broad range of Ferrari production over the years. Apart from the concours examples, there were a number of display only cars that swelled the numbers and added breadth to the gathering. One of the most unusual and rarest examples that appeared, was the rarely seen in public 330 GTS Harrah Targa, chassis number 10913, that appeared in the December 1969 edition of "Road & Track" magazine. The period conversion work was done in the Harrah Collection workshop in Reno, Nevada, and features a brushed stainless steel roll hoop and black vinyl covered removable roof panel, that stows in the boot when not in use, with a long flowing tinted rear screen, very much in the mould of the Porsche 911 targa models of the period. The current long time owner is Robert (Bob) Donner who has it on the appropriate Colorado license plate "TARGA". The work may offend purists, but it was a period transformation at the whim of the original owner, and is a unique example of how one man wanted his Ferrari to be that little bit different, in the spirit of the specialist coachwork creations of the fifties. However, everybody in attendance welcomed the opportunity to see this rare car, and were extremely grateful to Bob Donner for bringing it out for display. Although early cars were relatively thin on the ground there were examples of both eleven louvre and triple louvre 500 Superfast, and a fine pair of black 410 Superamericas, for lovers of the leviathans. The racing aspect was not ignored, with Symbolic entering a 312 PB, and Formula One representation was courtesy of Todd Morici with his 312 F1 and  Tom Murphy with his 642 F1 car. The major awards are appended below, apart from which there were individual class awards, plus eight Coppa Bella Macchina awards for those scoring 95 points or more in their class and 100% in the road test on Friday morning.

On Friday morning participants had the choice of a morning tourist rally taking in some of the regions spectacular scenery, or a drivers school at Pikes Peak International Raceway on a combined oval and infield circuit. Here Derek Bell tried his hand at the wheel of Art Zafiropoulo's F50 GT1. With an artificial chicane on part of the banking and using conservative rpm, he lapped within 10% of the outright record held by a Ferrari 333 SP, making one wonder what might have been had the project reached fulfillment.

The weekend was primarily circuit activity at PPIR, with the participants split into groups that reflected the type of car and level of driving ability, with sessions set aside for passenger rides. It is not ever day that one can experience the music of a V12 F1 engine at full song, particularly in the United States, so the laps put in by Tod Morici in his 312 F1 were greatly appreciated by all, as were the fewer laps of the Tom Murphy 642, which was experiencing some gear selection problems. Art Zafiropoulo had tweeked the suspension settings of the F50 GT1 to suggestions from Derek Bell, and put in a large number of laps in the awesome car, feeling that the set-up changes had worked, making the car more comfortable to drive. Everybody appeared to be having fun exercising their machinery without the constraints of speed limits, of note being Elliott Grossman in the 500 Superfast. The worst casualties during the whole weekend were a loss of some tyre rubber in spins from a couple of drivers, with fortunately no major mechanical maladies or bent panelwork.

The gala dinner and concours prizegiving took place at the International Centre adjacent to the Broadmoor on the Saturday evening, and next year's venue was anounced to be in Texas in June, so if you want to savour Ferrari Texas style, note the date in your diary now.
