Palm Beach, Florida, 19 – 24 January 2010

The nineteenth annual Cavallino Classic Ferrari gathering was held in its regular location in Palm Beach, Florida, between the 19th and 24th January, following its well established format of track activity and concours, with a good sprinkling of social activity during the evenings. As always, despite the continuing economic depression, there was a wide and varied selection of Ferrari models in attendance, which included a fine array of 250 GT SWB Berlinettas in recognition of the models 50th anniversary.

The high esteem in which the gathering is held can be gauged by the fact that, both Ferrari and Zagato, chose to make special model presentations on the concours field at the host Breakers Hotel on the Saturday. Also Ferrari’s CEO, Amadeo Felisa, together with Marco Arighi, Chris Vlahos and Andrea Rastrelli from the Classiche division were in attendance, as were Andrea Zagato and Paolo Di Taranto representing the latter company. Zagato presented the sixth and final example of the limited run of 575 GTZ’s, built on chassis # 140719, which is a modern homage to the 1956 250 GT Zagato coupé, chassis # 0515 GT, both in its colour scheme and some of the styling details. At 11.00am on Saturday morning Ferrari publicly unveiled their special project division’s second offering, the P540 Superfast Aperta. This is an open 599 GTB Fiorano based car with gold painted coachwork, built on chassis # 169010, which is a 2010 interpretation of the 330 LM berlinetta that was re-bodied as a spider for the Federico Fellini film “Tre Passi Nel Delirio”, starring Terence Stamp, in the sixties.

The gathering started with two private track days at Palm Beach International Raceway, for pre-booked participants who wanted to maximize their time on the circuit, followed by general track days on the Thursday and Friday. These included Historic Challenge qualifying sessions and races, for both the drum and disc brake classes. Peter Giddings in his Maserati 250F took a comfortable win in the drum brake group, from Carlos Monteverde in his Ferrari 750 Monza and Chuck Wegner in a Maserati 200 SI. Victory in the disc brake race went to Todd Morici in his 512 BB/LM, ahead of Mike Shine in a F40 LM and another 512 BB/LM driven by Jim Fuchs.

The social side was catered for on the Thursday evening by a reception at Jet Aviation’s hangars at Palm Beach International Airport, where the mix of Ferraris and executive jets on the tarmac is always a great occasion, whilst commercial flights take off and land a few hundred yards away. Here there is a People’s Choice Award, The Jet Aviation Cup, for the Ferrari that attendees would most like to take home, which was won by the stunning metallic grey 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, chassis # 3409 GT, of Kim and Dana Watkins. Friday evening was the ShowBoats Yacht Hop at the Rybovitch Yacht Club on the Intracoastal Waterway. Here the Ferraris line up along the quayside alongside multi million dollar motor and sailing yachts, some of which are so large and opulent that they make a very nice detached house look like something from shanty town! This gathering features a further People’s Choice Award, the Showboats Cup, which was won by the 250 GT LWB California Spider, chassis # 0937 GT, of Todd Morici.

The final major social event was the gala awards reception and dinner at The Breakers on the Saturday evening, where the winners of the Concours d’Elegance are announced. As the results are kept a closely guarded secret until the after dinner announcements, there is obviously trepidation and anticipation amongst entrants as to who is going to take the major honours. The Scuderia Cup for The Best of Show Competition Ferrari went to the 250 GT LWB “TdF” Berlinetta, chassis # 0677 GT, of Joseph Barone/Veronica Wong, with the Gran Turismo Ferrari Cup for Best of Show GT Ferrari going to the beautiful black and silver 212 Export Vignale Berlinetta, chassis # 0080 E, of Brian Ross.

The gathering came to a close on the Sunday with a multi marque concours and lunch in the ballroom at the renowned Mar-A-Lago Club on Palm Beach shores. Here, together with a number of Ferraris from the previous day, there was a fine selection of other automobiles. These included an Alfa Romeo TZ, Aston Martins, Bentleys, Jaguars in the form of XK 120 and E Types, a 1929 Packard Custom Eight, Rolls Royces, and a unique 1948 Vauxhall Roadster Prototype, to name but a few. The Best of Show award deservedly went to a spectacular black 1938 Delage D8S Letourneur et Marchand Aerodynamic Coupé, owned by the Patterson Collection in Kentucky.
