Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Pebble Beach , 17 August 2008

The grand finale to the Monterey historic week is always the exclusive Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links. This year’s edition gathered 224 vehicles from almost every era of motoring in twenty six classes, with entries from eleven countries including the host nation, from which cars came from twenty seven different states. Then there were the concept cars, manufacturer’s displays and Blackhawk Exhibition on the upper lawns of The Lodge, so there was plenty to pack into one day, and that was without visiting “The Garage”, where a variety of automobile related items were for sale.

The variety of cars on display never ceases to amaze, the selection committee obviously working very hard to provide something different each year. Then of course there are anniversaries to be celebrated, which in 2008 included the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GT California, for which there was a special display class. There was also a celebration of the centenary of General Motors, with a spectacular display of a range of their concept cars, together with the 1940 “Parade of Progress” Futurliner transporter, which as the name suggests was very futuristic for its time. There was a further class for sports cars with General Motors power, with entries as diverse as a F1 Scarab, through the Ol’ Yeller sports racer to a Bizzarrini Strada. Other themed classes included a well supported one for V16 Cadillacs, another for London to Brighton Veterans, classes for Pre and Post-War Lancias, road and race Ferrari classes, Lamborghini, and an extraordinary one for the “20+ litre Club”, which included Jay Leno’s wild 1953 Chrysler twin turbocharged 28.4 litre M47 Patton tank engine powered monster, finished in polished aluminium.

If one tired of the classics on the main field, then there was a fine selection of cars providing a glimpse of the future on the lawns of The Lodge, with the public debut of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, together with the Pininfarina Rolls Royce Hyperion, plus a fine selection from the likes of Cadillac, Chrysler, Dodge, Lexus, Lincoln and Land Rover, not to forget the stealth fighter like limited production Lamborghini Reventon. It can be seen that the choice was very wide, and it attracted attendees in large numbers, despite the normal misty conditions that are a general feature of the gathering. So much so in fact, that from an overview position of the main concours field at mid morning you could barely see the cars amidst the sea of humanity.
