Postcard  from Monterey 6

The jewel in the crown of the whole Monterey events schedule is the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which wraps up the activities on the final Sunday. Here 175 stunning pieces of machinery gathered on the 18th tee right beside the Pacific Ocean to be put under the scrutiny of panels of international judges with experience in the various classes. For me it was the third judging assignment of the week after the Concours on the Avenue and Concorso Italiano, and would certainly be the most difficult with eight cars in class M2, for Ferrari Competition Cars. Preparation standards at Pebble Beach are extremely high.

As soon as I and my fellow judges walked the line of cars in our class, we knew we were in for a hard morning’s work, as a number had been prepared by the top restoration shops in the USA, who all know the game to the nth degree! As expected the standards were extremely high, but fortunately we didn’t end up with any points ties, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fell into place only half a point apart, which was enough to make it clear cut, the class victory going to the 166 MM Barcetta, # 006 M, of Brian Ross. The Ferrari Road  Car class was won by the 250 GT S1 PF Cabriolet of Peter Kalikow, which also took the Enzo Ferrari award for the best Ferrari on the field.

Elsewhere featured marques were Aston Martin and Duesenberg, with a formidable array of each manufacturer’s output on display along the shoreline. It was nice that the featured marques were so diverse, pre-war opulence, as opposed to predominantly post war sporting and race cars. It was a Duesenberg that took the coveted “Best of Show” award, although surprisingly it wasn’t one of the elite carriages of the gentry, but a massively long snorting supercharged yellow sporting creation.
