Dino 166 P, 206 P and 206 S

The Dino name was first used on Ferrari cars with V engines in the late fifties on Formula One and sports racing models. Dino was the nickname from birth of Alfredo, Enzo Ferrari’s son, who had died in 1956, after suffering from ill health for most of his life. It was used in his memory, as he was reportedly working on a V6 engine project prior to his death. It continued to be used to designate any V6 or V8 engine through the early sixties, and then again in 1965, with the surprise announcement at the December 1964 press conference of a “Dino” sports prototype for the upcoming season. This turned out to be the Dino 166 P mid engine sports racing model, bearing chassis # 0834, which appeared unannounced at the Monza 1000kms Race in April 1965. This was in fact the first model to carry a "Dino" badge on the nose instead of a Ferrari one, previous models having only had the badging on the cam covers. The badge was a horizontal rectangle with his stylised script signature in blue on a yellow background.

The twin overhead cam per bank 65 degree V6 engine was soon upgraded from its original 1.6 litres capacity to 2 litres, to become the 206 P, with the bodywork altered to “Montagna” spider configuration. In this version of chassis # 0834 Ludovico Scarfiotti contested and won the 1965 European Mountain Championship, despite having missed the first two rounds. Later in the year, the 2 litre engine was increased to 2.4 litre capacity and put into a monoposto chassis for the Tasman series of races “down under” to be held in January and February 1966. Unfortunately the proposed driver, John Surtees had a serious accident in a CanAm race at Mosport in Canada in September 1965, which kept him out of action until the following April. Thus the project never came to fruition, but the car was held as a back-up to their 1966 F1 campaign.

In 1966 the Dino 206 S was announced as a contender in the 2 litre sports prototype class, with the intention of building fifty examples, which, as can be seen in the succeeding text, never happened. This series of cars eventually had their own specific “Dino” chassis number sequence, although along with 0834, 0840, a non running design study by Pininfarina, 0842 and 0852 (later re-numbered 002 in the Dino sequence) carried Ferrari chassis numbers. Visually the model was a scaled down version of the 4 litre V12 engine 330 P3 model, with bodywork by Piero Drogo’s Carrozzeria Sports cars in Modena. The model used either a triple carburettor set-up or fuel injection, whilst two three and four valve cylinder heads were also used.
