Premier global auction house Gooding & Company is once again returning to Arizona Auction Week with Geared Online Scottsdale Edition. The online-only auction event will be coupled with an exclusive local viewing showcasing all vehicles in Scottsdale, open to registered bidders and select members of the press. Following the success of 2021’s online-only approach to the Scottsdale auctions, Gooding & Company’s Geared Online allows collectors the world over to partake in the week’s exciting festivities. The online catalogue for the sale will be unveiled on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, and bidding will commence on Monday, January 24. Lots will begin closing at 10:00 AM MST on Friday, January 28. Local registered bidders interested in viewing available lots outside of Scottsdale are strongly encouraged to contact Gooding & Company specialists ahead of the auction.

1961 Maserati 5000 GT (Estimate: $700,000 – $900,000)

Introduced in 1959, the 5000 GT was the ultimate Maserati road car of its era and the only worthy rival to Ferrari's exotic Superamerica line. In all, Maserati built just 34 examples of the 5000 GT, which were clothed in elegant, custom coachwork by eight Italian coachbuilders including Allemano, Pinin Farina, Frua, Bertone, and Ghia Touring as the example here. These Maseratis were incredibly rare and expensive cars, retailing for twice the price of a contemporary 3500 GT, and attracting an elite clientele that included several VIP customers such as the Shah of Iran, Briggs Cunningham, Gianni Agnelli, and Karim Aga Khan.

The car presented here, chassis AM103.010, is the last of three chassis to receive coachwork by Touring, the famous Milan-based coachbuilder. All three Touring-bodied 5000 GTs featured similar styling, including a distinctive frontal treatment that referenced the company's famous 250F Grand Prix cars. This car was first displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1960,  then modified and shown later that year at the Torino Motor Show in November. It remained in Maserati ownership through 1961, during which time it was used to test an experimental 3.8-liter V-8 engine. This example was eventually sold to a member of the Orsi family and equipped with the conventional Tipo 103 Lucas fuel-injected five-liter V-8. In 1965, the 5000 GT was again returned to Maserati, where it was rebuilt to special order for Prince Abdel Majid bin-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

Owned by notable American and European collectors since the 1980s, this historic 5000 GT is being offered from a respected Maserati collector who has owned many of the finest coachbuilt road cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Under his ownership, a high-quality restoration was started with the aim of returning the car to its final configuration, as it was sold by Maserati in 1961, including a repaint in Azzurro Vincennes with black leather upholstery. Presented in partially restored condition, this offering extends a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire an important Maserati, complete its restoration, and debut it on the concours circuit.

Timeless German engineering is represented by a recently discovered, garage find 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster (Estimate: $275,000 – $325,000) that is being offered without reserve, as well as a highly sought-after 1964 Porsche 365 C Carrera 2 Coupe (Estimate: $575,000 – $650,000) offered for public sale for the first time after 40 years of single Southern California ownership. Collectors will also have the chance to bid on a fabulously restored, early production 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-Litre Roadster ($220,000 – $260,000) or a Bloomington Gold BENCHMARK Award-winning 1963 Chevrolet Corvette 327/340 Split-Window Coupe ($200,000 – $250,000).
